Woooo dawgy, this seemed to take a lifetime! Thought i’d do some character-hinting and answer a swathe of my ask catalogue in one go.

so i got my first medication, strattera, a couple months ago and have gone from 10mg up to 80mg - and it's absolutely not doing a thing, other than giving me insomnia and sleep apnea. i've stopped taking it for about 2 weeks now and i feel no difference, but my sleep habits are back to normal now. my psychiatrist specifically said at my 1st appointment that he does not prescribe stimulants. should i look for a new psych to prescribe something else, or should i try and talk it out with him first?

Okay, so first I’m just going to note that stopping a medication like Strattera cold turkey is a really bad idea, even if it’s not helping your symptoms. I’m glad you haven’t experienced any bad effects from doing that!

As for your psych, tell him that the Strattera is useless and you want to try a stimulant. He will probably remind you that he doesn’t prescribe stimulants. When he does that, you respond with a request for a referral to someone who will, since stimulants are still the go-to for ADHD treatment anyway. (I personally think it’s ludicrous for a psych to say they treat ADHD and then refuse to prescribe stimulants. I mean, my GP won’t prescribe stimulants but she’s not a psychiatrist and I had another doctor who did so it wasn’t a problem. Now I’m waiting on a psych referral to go through so I can get back on stimulants.)
