The silence between them lingered and thickened. John was actually too shocked to even trust himself to speak, so he just ... stayed quiet as he gathered himself.
❝ How — I mean. Obviously. It's just — were we really that stupid?❞ He let out a heavy breath, bringing his hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose. He knew that was also probably the wrong thing to say. He was always doing that. He was trying to be better. Shit.
He looked back up at Kate, a little of his own guilt flickering across his features. They had agreed without even saying that whatever happened between them was supposed to be no strings attached, totally based on blowing off some steam. This was like the exact opposite of that.
He tilted his head, looking her over and his eyes landed on her stomach. Hidden away by an oversized jacket. He didn't really blame her for not telling him sooner, even though he was a little pissed about it. He wouldn't have wanted to deal with it, didn't want to deal with it. If he was her, he wouldn't have wanted to deal with him either.
Finally, he looked back at her face, shaking his head. ❝What the hell are we going to do?❞
