The first snow had come to the forest—a wet, heavy kind of snowfall that piled on branches and roots. The troops were sequestered to where ever they had last been on duty until the storm passed. Tess had been in the training halls when the snow had started and found herself stuck there.
With so many Leafmen trapped indoors and becoming increasingly bored, the captains got creative. They took names and began to organize small sparring matches. Fights never got violent, and everyone was able to let off some steam. It gave the clerks and civilians a distraction, and teams cheered each other on.
Tess adjusted the wrappings on her knuckles, resting for a moment between bouts. She’d lost her last match, but it had been a close thing. Mentally, she made a note to ask her opponent—Pashija, from Captain Okeri’s squad—for a lesson on that open-palmed hit. With only a little force, the other Leafman had knocked Tess back seven feet.
