and you know what? i am REALLY sick of these ads that are openly mocking people for being concerned about the products they’re selling.
Amazon’s super bowl ad where the Alexa mocks Chris Hemsworth for being worried about giving spy software control over his entire life. Waymo’s ad with the intro “the robots are coming!” mocking people who are rightfully extremely concerned about sharing the road with, or riding in, self-driving cars.
i don’t know, it’s just genuinely insane to me. “Oh, you have legitimate concerns about our shitty product? sounds like you’re just lame!!!” like what kind of “quiet part out loud” marketing is that?
It's because a lot of marketing hasn't been about making money in a long time. What little research exists on the efficacy of targeted advertisement (the absence of which tells a story in its own right) actually indicates it's not cost effective. Yes they get more click throughs and brand engagement than with an equal number of untargeted ads, but the extra cost of the targeting makes them less effective per $.
And yet every marketing department is so all in on targeted advertisement that you sound like a crazy person if you suggest it doesn't work. Because their true purpose isn't to advertise to consumers, but to executives of the corporations they're attached to. They don't need to actually create a cost effective service if they can convince the few select people in power that they're doing that.
Aaaaand also stroke the executives' egos. Make them feel like they're communicating to the world and getting some kind of response they control back from it. That's who these "you're so dumb for worrying about our product" ads are for. Not you the consumer, but the CEO who greenlit it because he's angry and upset about people keep ragging on his company and he likes the idea that people watching that ad are laughing at the naysayers with him.
I've been kind of baffled by the entire concept of ads for a long time.
Like, ever since I was a little kid, it's been television 101 for me that as soon as the commercials come on, you either take your potty break then, or switch to another channel for a few minutes, or mute and read a couple pages of a book until it comes back on. Commercials are an irritation that you can't avoid, but that you damn sure don't pay attention to them either.
There are exceptions, but I'm not even sure how good they are at selling me the product. Like, yeah, the Geico and Allstate commercials make me laugh, I'll actually watch those. But I've never had Geico or Allstate, either. It's good at entertaining me, but it doesn't translate to me buying their product.
And I'd be like. Is it just me? Does this stuff actually work on people in general, and it's just me and a few other grouches that it doesn't? That would be plausible, but the more I read the more I get the sense that it's not just me.
(And then there's political ads specifically, which are a whole other level of irritating and which I'm positive actually alienate normal people more than anything else).
I'm old enough that I grew up with a tv on four legs where you had to get up and turn a knob to change the channel--and we did get up and flip channels during commercials, or take a quick snack or bathroom break. OTOH, sometimes I am so pissed at how much of my memory is occupied by advertising jingles and slogans from the 1970s and '80s. If I could delete memories like Sherlock Holmes, that shit would be first on the list.
Most of advertising thru the ages is all about brand recognition. If you're exposed to the same 30 second ad six times a night, even if you don't pay attention, it's gonna worm its way into your memory. If somebody IRL says they're shopping for auto insurance, you're going to flash on a mascot or jingle instantly.
Chances are you know the names of companies you've never used.
Even though people don't vote they can probably name a candidate or two. And alas, most voters simply select names they recognize once they're in the voting booth, regardless of worth.
Certain ads (radio/steaming especially) repeat repeat repeat the name of the company or product as many times as possible to lodge that in your skull.
It's literally psychological warfare. Psyop.
