A tapu? What was one of the island deities doing so far away from Alola? Perhaps the old mage misunderstood that the tapus could leave their islands, maybe he should inquire on that.
“Your one of the tapus I have heard so much about. What is like watching a whole island? I’d love to watch my own island(I should just make my own island). What are you doing away from your island? Can you leave the island?” The old fox was inquiring about islands until he could not avoid the fairy’s question any longer.
Word had spread about how he had to kill his friend in the past. He might as well clear the air. This was something that this old fox would have to carry until the grave. Inari figured he should start from the beginning. After all this story needed context. It would best to explain where and why it came to that fatal decision.
“When a pokemon or human becomes a deity, it requires a huge amount of energy, but that energy also needs to be under control constantly. My friend Yumi, he was an umbreon that changed into a kyogre. Tied to the moon by evolution. But he could not retain his sense of self.”
Images flashed through the vulpine’s head. The torrential storms pounding down on him, strong enough to start flooding the wooded area. In the center, screaming into the heavens, was a raving kyogre, going in and out of a primal state.
“I had to act quickly. If I did not stop him at the time, he risked destroying the nearby town. So…I had to kill him before the situation grew worse.” Lowering his head out of shame, Inari remained silent for a moment. The fight had not just drained him emotionally, but the land was destroyed, with both titans having left their marks on the region, leaving a crater that would become the Lake of Rage.
“After what happened with the boy and Asami, I have to ask myself: did I do enough? Was there something I could have done? I could have saved him if I was smart enough.” The ninetail’s heart sank. “But hey! Asami’s alive now! Always best to look on the bright side of life. She sure is lucky to have a ho-oh as a best friend. The sun birds can only revive those they’re close to after all. A shame Yumi didn’t know Anju like I did but, given limes, make limeade in all” he said in a chipper voice.
“If you would excuse me.” With that the old titan took his leave, needing to clear his head and his cheery facade wavering.
