Kurai watched as Venux walked off and then looked at her note. "Says here I have to join Dierdre and Sedanas, but I didn't receive a picture.. Great. Guess I have to go search."
She walked off towards the area where the formal and informal sides meet, expecting her new partners would be somewhere over there. She stood by a table covered in drinks, plates, food, etc. and waited to see if her new partners could find her.
"True, true." Kurai watched as a few men and women stumbled around from drunkenness. "What should we do until dinner then?" She turned and looked at her partner, waiting for a suggestion.
(( pretty damn long because holy internal monologue and thinking. if you could suffocate from thinking too much, mistreil would be long dead. i'm too lazy to draw right now so i'll do it some other time n_n; read more ahoy! ))
As the black haired girl left, Mistreil felt relieved. Nothing bad had come of it, though Nekyu had seemed as though he was going to attack her for a moment.
Mistreil stood silent as Nekyu placed his coat and cape on her. An unexpected act of kindness that she couldn't help but feel concerned with. The incubus who had torn "his" body apart before was providing her with warmth. Maybe he noticed her shaking? In any case, she wasn't quite sure how to respond, though she blushed slightly at the gesture.
"You know you-- You looked a little chilly, dear. Anyways,t hank you for your concerns, but I'm alright. I was uh... Just taking a little breather! I'm quite fine. You two go enjoy the ball, don't mind me."
He seemed like he decided to change his words at the start. The words he now spoke were hollow-- fake. A facade. He seemed to be trying to be formal, polite, kind. A good host, maybe. This unnerved her more. She had no idea what Nekyu might be thinking. In general, people who hid ther intentions and true thoughts behind smiles terrified her. The rest of his words just entered one ear and exited the other. Though he seemed to act kindly towards her, she couldn't tell if it was okay to let her concerns for him grow, as he still seemed tired, or if she should withhold some concern for herself.
"You know, to be quite honest..."
As he approached her ear, she tensed up. His breath flowing into her ear, his lips and nose brushing against her, slightly shaking. She wasn't very used to physical contact, especially from males, and definitely not by any erogenous zones.
"Nevermind."
A playful grin caught her glance, before an explosion erupted. Alarmed, she looked around a bit, before spotting the ogre. Derp, was it? It seemed as though casualties were avoided, easing her mind slightly. As Nekyu repaired the damages, he fell onto Mistreil, of which she was reminded of the situation she was in. As he pushed himself off and stumbled to an exit, she sat down. Absentminded as she was, the force with which Nekyu pushed himself off of her was enough to move her to the ground.
Was Nekyu really okay? She had wondered if he had a change of heart, and though his act of kindness made her wonder it more, his facade made her doubt him. Why should she even worry about him? Because he might have lost someone he considered a friend? Because he protected Mistreil once? Did she pity him? She didn't like the idea of pity. Maybe she empathized with him? But what would earn her empathy? Was he sad? Was he lonely? She hadn't the slightest idea. Maybe it was just a martyr complex. The other Mistreil seemed to have had one up to a certain point. The conversation he once had with the other one quietly echoed in her thoughts:
"... I live to eat, and your pain brings me joy. Love is something that should not come to me. Ever."
"... you’ll be lonely if you keep pushing people away."
He didn't try to eat. He didn't seem happy. His recent actions went against natural logic, though maybe he was restraining himself for the sake of the party. Taking that as the explanation, she wondered the second part of his sentence. He didn't seem to want to love or be loved, and maybe making friends was the same. But trying to protect the other Mistreil went against that logic, as did offering his coat and cape to her. What was he going to say to her? Maybe that would've given her a clearer answer. But he locked away those words. Maybe he was protecting himself? Did he put up a wall in the last moment to protect himself? She had put up many walls in her life to protect herself, but it only ever made her feel lonely. More than any physical pain she could ever feel, being lonely was even more painful. Was he lonely?
Her thoughts that fired in an attempt to process and rationalize what was going on were disrupted by Acorn.
"Are you alright? Forgive me for not knowing your name, I’m a bit new around here so I have no clue who you are or who that incubus is. I do wonder what his problem is..."
Mistreil looked up, a bit startled. She tried to collect herself, as her thoughts disappeared momentarily.
"Ah... Uh... I'm... Mistreil. The one who just left was Nekyu--" She noticed nearby that Venux was starting to wander off. Did she mean Venux instead? Though he did seem to have his incubus features in their first, brief, encounter, they didn't seem to be around now.
"I uh... I hope he's okay." As she sat there, a piece of paper fluttered onto her lap, assigning her next partner:
Stupidd
Though Pi had left Mistreil in the events of the week before, Mistreil more or less understood the rabbit-eared girl's thoughts. She was like the previous Mistreil-- who would quickly change sides and do anything to protect his smile and happiness, even if that meant abandoning someone. It's not like she knew the situation either, so... She wasn't to blame. Regardless, Mistreil felt a bit uneasy and concerned with people who always wore smiles. She couldn't tell when those sorts of people had honest smiles on, or were concealing something. They could be innocent or dangerous, and she hadn't the slightest idea which one Stupidd was.
Still, Mistreil looked around for Pi and noticed Viridys, Xero and an unknown woman near her aswell. Unsure whether it was okay to interrupt them, she stayed put. Stupidd seemed more or less outgoing, so she'd probably approach whenever she received her paper. She was mentally exhausted, as her thoughts had overloaded her. She couldn't recollect them, and so, she just sat there and waited.
"O-okay," she responded as she pulled the ribbon from the box. As she opened it, the glimmer of gold sparkled under the light. A much more suitable gift than her own, with a much larger target audience. Why didn’t I give gold instead…? That would’ve been a lot safer. Come to think of it, most of the attendees look like they have combat experience… A teddybear wouldn’t really be all that useful.
"Thank y—" Thud. A sweet song echoed through her ears, mixed with the faint sound of sliding. She looked around, her gaze quickly settling on Nekyu. Concerns flooded her mind, both for him, and for herself.
She wanted to see if he was okay. The Mistreil that she had created, the one who inhabited her body prior, had despised him for obvious reasons, though she didn’t harbour the same feelings as him. Nekyu had injured him on nearly all of their meetings, and that’s what scared her. While she was a milletian, being hurt wasn’t something she enjoyed very much. She was used to combat, but she had prepared herself for pain in those situations. But Nekyu had tried to protect Mistreil, or that’s what it looked like to her. Perhaps he had a change of heart, or maybe he felt a connection to Mistreil. The words Nekyu spoke, if they were from anyone else, or maybe if he hadn’t grown to hate the world so much, would’ve surely pleased him. But, if Nekyu did find a friend in that other Mistreil, would he not hate her for replacing his friend? She had observed those feelings in both Laima and Guede, and if Nekyu felt the same, then he might attack her.
As her thoughts fired reasons for and against helping Nekyu, she saw a few ice shards falling. They were small, and not very dangerous, but she realized that this meant the venue was in danger. Nekyu was one of the hosts— and if he collapsed, would the structure also fall? Mistreil also saw another girl approaching the incubus with food.
Was Nekyu hungry? Had he collapsed from hunger? If so, this girl might be in danger. If the events repeated themselves, she might be feasted on. She already had an eyepatch— if she lost her other eye, that would definitely be terrible. Taking a deep breath, Mistreil decided that she’d approach Nekyu. If she was there, she could try to protect the other girl, if the situation took a turn for the worse.
"Thank you, Venux. I… err… I’m sorry. I’ll be back— maybe. Hopefully? I’m sorry." Venux had fought against Nekyu, if her relatively blurry memories served her right, so dragging him along probably wouldn’t end well. She didn’t want to risk anyone else being injured, in any case. She ran over to the incubus, kneeling beside him.
"Nekyu…? A-are you okay?" Both her voice and body shook ever so slightly, whether from the cold or fear, she couldn’t tell.
(( i lost this post 4 times let me tell you. i’ll link stuff later but i want to go back to sleep. each time i typed this, it took half an hour and i am so done with tumblr mobile i swear to god
on a side note hALOE CANNOT LOSE HER OTHER EYE SHE’S TOO CUTE TO BE INJURED. and im sort of sad that i had to ditch the cutie. dang. ))
Relief swept over Mistreil as she took the small box, passing over her somewhat large and carefully wrapped gift in return.
"Thank you." She smiled slightly, a slight concern arising on her face.
While he seemed rather ‘cute’ to her, he also appeared to be more mature, and she wondered if her present was okay. Perhaps something that had a wider target audience, such as chocolates, would have been more appropriate. Regret swirled through her thoughts, and she could only hope that he might enjoy it, or know someone who would.
She glanced at Venux before looking back at the box in her hands. He most certainly seemed to have been at the event that occured shortly before the ball. Looking around a bit more, she also realized Nekyu, Xero, Pi and Hip were also in attendance. Hopefully, after her disappearance, everything ended okay. She pondered asking Venux, but decided against it.
"E-err… Is it alright if I open it?" Her hands played with the box as she waited, not quite sure if she should wait to leave before opening the gift, or opening it now so she could properly express her gratitude.
Mistreil glanced around nervously. 'Venux' was the one who was supposed to receive her gift. It was a name she didn't quite recognize, and she hoped that maybe they would approach her first. A few hours passed, to no avail, as she stood there with her gift.
As people slowly gathered to find their partners, she noticed a figure by the walls. She took a deep breath. This person could be Venux, since he didn't seem to have a partner near him, or maybe he might know who Venux is.
Nervously, Mistreil approached him, hiding behind her present.
"U-umm... Are you... Venux?" she asked, and upon closer inspection, she slightly recognized him as one of the people that had arrived around the time of Avriana's death. She also noticed his relatively displeased, or rather, grumpy disposition, which unnerved her even more.
I hope I didn't make a mistake. I hope he's Venux, or else this would be very, very embarrassing.
