The guard still stood behind her, knife flashing in what little light there was, ready for blood. It was only by Ruby’s word that he’d stopped, rather than killing the man on sight.She stood primly between them both, hands clasped prettily, lips smiling sweetly behind her veil. “How lucky you are, then, to be able to choose your own death.”
“However, my dear, you’re currently in a very inopportune place at a rather irritating time.” Dawn was coming on. This fortress had little in the ways of privacy, but she was still loathe to run into anyone unexpectedly, especially in the wing in which she currently resided. “You might inform me as to what you did imagine for yourself, of course. You’ll find I can be very obliging.”
It sounded more like a joke than anything, and, indeed, it was a mostly empty threat. Ruby wasn’t soft-hearted enough not to defend herself should the need arise, and indeed half expected it too. But she was, as always, fool enough to let herself hope that things wouldn’t go as badly as they possibly could.
