Here it is at last. Leventine Mentor.
Summary:
I had regrets when I activated the shield that would save humanity. What I didn't know was the silent prayer I had been saying would be answered.
I'd wake up quite a while into the past, and with allies from Altaïr's time as both student and mentor. I would make things better for Ezio once he arrived and provide comfort to another so desperate for it.
As I stood before the device meant to activate the shield a lot was going on. Minverna explained its purpose, and then it was revealed Juno perverted it. If I understood correctly, if Juno wasn't there I would have lived. It was a death sentence with Juno present. Hearing enough and having enough I yelled
“You need to go. All of you. Now. Get as far away from here as you can.”
I shouted towards my team, not the two ISU they could fuck themselves for all I cared
“Come with us.”
My father shouted back, oh now he wants to be my dad, Shaun weakly added more to contribute really
“We'll find another way.”
“There isn't time!”
Rebecca and I shouted, I glanced at her, seeing that while she agreed with me, she didn't like that I would have to die. My father tried one last time
“Son…”
“You know it's true. It's already started. I need to do this now, I don't have regrets. So go! GO!”
I said for a final time to them, to make them see I was the master of my fate. They did not know I lied to them.
I had regrets about a lot of things. Many about my ancestors and the suffering they underwent, especially Ezio, my wonderful and loyal prophet. Still the biggest two that surprisingly crossed my mind was, A Ezio not having a proper brotherhood to lean on especially in Rome. And B was Malik Al-Sayf who had been so lonely after Kadar died. I didn't know what I could do even now in death. Because death is so final usually.
And that was strange because my thoughts kept going, suggesting my heart kept beating despite burning to save the world, was death allergic to me? I honestly didn't perceive anything at first. Until I started to hear voices. Italian mixed with Latin, sure the people at Abestrgo spoke Italian, but it had a mix of other languages too.
Great, I was bleeding while dying. That's just what I needed, a dying bleed. But then, that is when I felt someone heft me onto their back, that was real. I must have made some sort of noise because they put a reassuring hand on my limp arms and said in…Arabic?!
“Easy brother, I have you. You're safe.”
I couldn't respond for the moment. But I was waking up. So I was alive, likely in Rome again. And I hadn't registered the voice at first, shocked by the Arabic spoken until I fully came to and found my face buried in a familiar neck. The darkly tanned skin still had a strong Jasmine and Sandalwood scent. I despite my groggy state managed to say, in Arabic
“Safety and Peace Dai”
He froze for just a step before continuing clearly shocked by the fact A I spoke Arabic, and his regional dialect, and B I basically identified myself as an assassin.
“Upon you as well brother. Forgive my delay I was just surprised that you speak Syrian Arabic, and so fluently as well.”
“There is nothing to forgive in terms of your delay. I'd be shocked too if someone spoke my mother tongue and dialect like they lived there their entire lives.”
I replied to him. He nodded and then asked
“Do you know where we are?”
"Si. Ah my apologies, yes I do. We are in Rome, Italy. Or as you knew it, the Holy Roman Empire.”
I replied, slipping some Italian in by accident. He nodded again before saying
“I am Malik Al-Sayf.”
“Desmond Miles. An honor to meet you Dai.”
I swear I could feel the blush on Malik’s face.
“An honor? Why?”
“It would be an honor to meet the man who whipped my asshole ancestor into shape.”
Malik stopped again before it dawned on him, whom I just insulted before keeping what would have been boastuous laughter quiet replied
“I see that Novice’s own family doesn't let him get away with his crap.”
“Never.”
He gently patted my arm, a rare gesture from him I knew to mean he was pleased. I wasn't honestly trying to please or impress Malik at this point. But it happened. We had snuck into the Centro district. And I pointed Malik to the entrance of Tiber Island and we entered rather roughly. I got separated from Malik briefly. But he was quick to my side to help me up.
Once I was on my feet, I sneezed. It was dusty down here. Malik looks around before he says
“Bless you. And this has potential.”
“Thank you and I agree.”
I looked around. I knew what this would become. Yet, with Malik at my side more could be done. I sighed and said
“We need help.”
“I am glad you realize this.”
Had it been my father, I would have been offended. But this was the Devil of Masyaf for crying out loud. I looked at Malik and spoke
“Malik, Dai, I must be honest with you, I do not know where I rank as an assassin. From your lifetime I am 900 years into the future. 500 years from the ancestor of mine currently here in the region. From your lifetime you are currently 350 years into the future.”
I paused to let Malik process that information. His brow furrowed the way it did when he was not only processing information but calculating how to respond. I do not know what went through his mind, but he replied
“Thank you Desmond for being honest with me. Based on what you have told me I take it that the brotherhood is a mere ghost of its former glory, that the ranking system is largely ignored.”
“An astute and accurate guess. Yes. That is essentially what has occurred over time.”
Malik nodded before he said
“Let's get you healed before we do anything drastic for the moment. I'll have to surface for supplies and can listen for information.”
That's when I noticed he has effortlessly transitioned from Arabic to Italian mid sentence. Anyone else it would have been jarring but Malik, as with everything he has done since Solomon's Temple made it appear effortless. I smiled and said, in Italian, to show I was keeping up
“That is agreeable Dai.”
