Reflections on the characterisation of Wyll and Mizora...

Much of the outrage around Wyll and Mizora comes from moralizing player preferences rather than engaging with the narrative logic of Baldur’s Gate 3 as a D&D-based CRPG. Criticism of writing and representation is valid; issues emerge when structural narrative constraints are reframed as malicious intent.

Enjoying a wide range of characters or playstyles in Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t reflect who people are in real life. RPing an evil run or liking morally complex characters doesn’t make players “terrible people,” even if some online discourse insists it does.

What’s striking is how parts of the fandom react to characters like Minthara and Mizora; dislike becomes very personal. That same energy rarely targets Raphael or Nere, which is worth thinking about. Criticism is natural, but once it becomes moralizing, these spaces become unwelcoming fast.

Wyll, Mizora, and Narrative Consistency

Wyll’s story hinges on a choice he made at the age of seventeen: a pact with a devil to save Baldur’s Gate from the Cult of the Dragon. In the Forgotten Realms, magic works much like the laws of nature; it provides physics and consequences. Removing those stakes would be a disservice to Wyll and put him in plot armor. His heroism comes not from immunity, but from making a life-altering decision, becoming the Blade of Frontiers, fighting for the beating heart of Baldur’s Gate. That struggle is what makes him believable.

Like it or not, Mizora is intrinsic to Wyll’s arc. A non-human, lawful-evil aligned character, she supports if the player’s choices align, or becomes an obstacle: antagonising Wyll and, in extension, the party if not. And perhaps the most disliked and misunderstood character for this very reason. As a Cambion, she operates on a timescale and motivations far beyond mortal concerns — contracts, leverage, and long-term ambition. A far cry from romance or jealousy.

But Mizora is more than just a villain... For what happens to the denizens of Avernus who fail to carry out their Mistress Zariel's will? These beings operate on suffering, domination, and despair. Any attempts to bypass, remove, or rescue Wyll from this ecosystem by erasing in-game consequences risk undermining both characters and creating inconsistencies.

Arguably, hanging around in camp, long after the contract has been burned, is exactly how a Cambion in Zariel's employ would operate. Why? "Creatures like them don't play games unless they know they can win.”

Over-Identification, Medium, and Expectations

The friction stems from identifying with fictional characters: interpreting narrative constraints as harm. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a CRPG with romance elements. Built on decades of revised editions of D&D, the game itself merely opens the door for the player. It's an ambitious endeavor, but it pales next to the source material.

When Larian rewrote Wyll's script and re-recorded lines late into early access, it left Wyll (and Karlach) with far less content than we, the fans, hoped. To some, one-dimensional and bland. Disappointment is more than valid; As someone in the PoC community, I sympathize with the frustration of seeing yet another Black protagonist de-prioritised and less fleshed out. Wyll deserves so much more. The reason for Wyll's rewrite? Player feedback.

And to be honest... I prefer the official version over the old one; it definitely skyrocketed his likability. The EA version definitely had some problems — like Mizora’s role and impact: painting Wyll as insecure and drawn to forbidden power. His relationship with his patron read as mutual, perhaps even romantic.

That’s why I think delving into the world of tabletop D&D helps to contextualize the frameworks of the in-game world. D&D isn’t about perfect outcomes or controlling every story beat; it’s about cooperation, creativity, strategy, and navigating dice rolls whilst exploring a vast high-fantasy setting. And yes, a little bit of chaos.
