It isn’t something I talk a lot about on here, if ever, but I’m asthmatic. Asthma is a chronic lung condition - and while for some people (and in normal times) asthma is a minor nuisance, for many people asthma is a life-limiting condition. At the best of times.
This is not the best of times.
The UK Government at the moment says that it is prioritising those at most risk of dying from COVID-19. Many asthmatics (myself included) were shocked to find out that asthmatics (you know, people with a lung condition in a respiratory pandemic) are now not considered to be a priority group in the new vaccination system - we will instead be expected to get vaccinated along with the rest of the presumed-healthy population.
I’m actually shaking a little with all of this, to be honest - I had a “normal” (i.e., non-COVID) chest infection late-February last year that was serious enough that I nearly had to go to hospital. I am terrified of what might happen if I, a teacher in a school (one of the main vectors of infection), get COVID. Not just for myself (although - yes, I’m terrified), but for my mum, who is also asthmatic, and my grandfather, who is heavily dependent on our family for basic support and who has COPD.
Here’s the thing: the “long tail” of COVID can be devastating - "healthy” people with no underlying health conditions experience fatigue and lasting health effects long after they have fought off the virus, even if they were asymptomatic or the infection was mild.
That’s healthy people. My lung capacity (as measured by a peak flow score) is at best below what it should be for a healthy adult of my age and build. (My Personal Best is 390, a healthy adult should be getting 400-700 on a peak flow test).
It is so important that these health conditions are taken seriously, especially in the middle of a respiratory pandemic - things like mask-wearing and adequate vaccination programs are literally a matter of life or death for all of us, but especially for people with underlying health conditions, and we need your help and advocacy now more than ever.
If you’ve read through all of this, thank you - and please consider signing the Asthma UK petition here. All of your support always means so much, and this is no exception. Thank you.
parameddic asked: “That cough sounds pretty bad.” for your human connor maybe? if you want!
❝ i asked him to stop smoking. ❞ connor had opted to take an uber home from work, already not feeling well enough to drive. the moment he sat inside the driver lit a cigarette — connor’s worst asthma trigger. he tried to explain, but it turned into an argument and before he knew it he was being booted from the man’s car. the driver took things a step further before connor could step out, blowing a large puff of smoke in his face.
he screen-shotted the driver’s information before it disappeared, the intent to file a report for assault and battery. but first, he needed to breathe. of course, he didn’t have his inhaler on him. he had one at his desk, and one at home. the heavy smoke, added on top of the cold he was likely coming down with was proving to be a bit too much for his lungs. every attempted deep breath sent him further into a coughing fit. he doesn’t waste his breath explaining himself.
❝ it’s asthma. ❞ connor offered simply. granted, downtown detroit probably wasn’t the best place to go looking for fresh air, but it’s where he’d landed.
i almost got asthma because i laughed so much at quackity’s stream and the funny thing is that it wouldn’t even have been the first time that a stream of quackity triggered in me an asthma attack, he’s just that funny
Quite a few years ago, I was a six month old with asthma. Now after years of medicine, I am a 16 year old... with asthma.
Fun fact : Infants born with asthma have a high probability of it being automatically cured or already disappearing for sometime with age. So my doctor used to tell my mother and me that it may be cured by the time I make 5-6. When I passed that threshold, the age because 10-11. And when I passed that threshold, it became 14-15. After passing that threshold I was told that I would probably have asthma forever. No idea why but I burst out laughing whenever I think of this whole shit.
*I accidentally shatter my inhaler so my friends put the Albuterol canister in a cheese whiz spray lid but I am laughing too hard to inhale it and they begin to yell and then leave me to my joyous wheezing*
「 zhu zhengting. ’96 liner. cismale. he/him. 」 ✧ don’t look now, but i’m pretty sure that’s wen yunru (henri). you know, the maknae, main dancer, and lead rapper of lotto. they’re originally from hangzhou, china and have been under marathon entertainment for nine years. they’re known to be adroit and jaunty but are often criticized for being hypocritical and overwrought.
this is so so late and i’m so sorry! i couldn’t get on my laptop until now! anyways, hi yes i’m nieve, your resident youngin (at 17), est, and she/her, and i’m so excited to begin interacting with you all and just having fun! here are some >plots< and his >stats<. i’ll have an in-depth profile made, but below the cut are some summarized ideas of him! like/heart this again if you haven’t before to plot!
warning: asthma tw
born in hangzhou, china, but raised dually in france and china ! yun’s family are mostly french-chinese since his father was adopted by a french-chinese family and his mother is from hangzhou.
during summers and winters, he was sent off to spend time with his grandparents along with his older sister as a “learning and cultural” experience, but really it was just to have him off his parents’ hands for a bit; regardless, he treasured and actually looked forward to such vacations
during his childhood when he wasn’t in france, yunru would often shadow his mother when she went to practice for her ballet shows, piquing his interest at her style of dance and could be seen trying to mimic her gracefulness, albeit in a clumsy manner
though what caught his attention more was traditional chinese dances, particularly with ribbons, fans, and swords. he would continue to train up until his debut at eighteen years old (along with modern contemporary)
had auditioned at age nine/ten to be a part of the chinese entertainment company called dahlia ent., holding onto his childish dreams of becoming a world-renowned dancer of his own accordance with his parents’ and grandmother’s support
left at age thirteen since the company held no projects to further yunru along his chosen career path, but one year later, would audition to join marathon entertainment through the international scouting in china and successfully get in! (maybe dahlia entertainment had a say in this)
this moment would develop how hypercritical he is of himself and the world around him, obsession with/hatred of perfection, and constant overthinking/anxiousness
unfortunately, this was a completely new country and new surroundings, practically leaving his family behind, but his grandmother offered to rent an apartment for him and her to stay up.
could not speak a lick of korean, so he had to mime everything and use google translate to try and communicate properly, but he forced himself day and night to study and learn how to speak it (his grandmother didn’t speak it either, so they were two lost people in this new world)
definitely a possible plot for a trainee his age to help yun navigate around korea and the building during his difficult time there--looking at you theory and lotto members particularly!!
// TW ASTHMA ATTACK MENTION & HOSPITALS // has been asthamtic since young and used to have particularly rough attacks before he worked himself to the ground to be able to withstand exercise. there have been times where he had to go to the hospital because he could not breathe properly and his parents were absolutely terrified. // TW ASTHMA ATTACK MENTION & HOSPITALS END //
was very excited to be told he would debut with lotto as the main dancer AND lead rapper, so he once again began the cycle of trying to perfect whatever rapping skills are required
the lukewarm and constant fanwars did make him uneasy, but he looks back on those days as growth. being now an idol-actor, staring in three dramas since 2017 (see stats for more details)
a bit of a terrible fashion person; loves playing video games & magic card tricks, anything with dancing, and subtle pranks.
Hey! I’m not sure if I’ve asked this before, but if I have I don’t remember. Do any of you have advice for flying when you have asthma that is set off by perfume or essential oils? I want to be able to visit my grandma again but she’s on the other side of the country and it usually involves at least six hours in an airplane.
My asthma issues are complicated by the fact that I have heart issues; my asthma isn’t actually that bad but I can’t use a rescue inhaler because it makes my tachycardia REALLY bad really fast. Wheezing also makes my heart speed up. I am concerned that if I have an asthma attack on the plane it would be really, really bad. So...any suggestions?
