i mean, it wasn’t her fault. the only thing alice did wrong was trust the wrong people, but the fact that the reach used her will never be her fault. debate closed.
except, alice feels differently. because you’ve got the blue beetle out there, someone who arguably had every opportunity she had to fall from grace and never did. it’s possible to resist reach control — he’s living proof. as if alice needed help convincing herself she should have been able to… do something. anything.
and to a certain degree she is aware that view is skewed. she’s not under any illusions about her ( or scarab! ) having control when she didn’t. but, and i’ve said this a million times to different people, she would rather let people believe it was her fault than admit they took her choices from her. other people can think she failed to be a hero, but at least she doesn’t have to describe her failure to stay human.
even though what the reach made her do was out of her hands, she still did it. alice has learned to live with that and not to hate herself for it, so in one sense all she needed to learn it wasn’t her fault was to get the hell away from the reach. but she can’t stop carrying it and she doesn’t want to talk about it. so what would it take for her to learn to say the words “it wasn’t my fault” aloud to someone else? i honestly don’t know yet.
