At Close Range was released in the US on 18 April 1986.
Written by Nicholas Kazan, and based on a real-life Pennsylvania crime family, and directed by James Foley, the film did not find an audience at the box office, despite positive reviews (especially for Sean Penn and Christopher Walken).
Madonna (who was married to Sean Penn at the time) provided the theme song (based on a melody that Patrick Leonard had written and had been rejected for use in another film), which became "Live to Tell" (the single became her 3rd #1 hit).
If you’re following At Close Range or found me through AO3, hi, hello, I adore you. Chapter 15 is halfway done. The second half is being a little bitch. My brain has officially checked out for the night, and I’m trying to lure it back with root beer and an edible. I will either get incredibly productive or be asleep by 9 p.m. There is no in-between.
I’m planning to post the chapter late morning or early afternoon tomorrow, before I head out to get a new tattoo, something really beautiful, in memory of my cat. Nothing like coping with the good kind of physical pain. This will be tattoo number six, part of the planned sleeves I’m slowly building.
I just don’t want to release a chapter unless it feels right. The quality matters. Dina and Ellie deserve it. Honestly, we all do.
Thanks

Remembering James Foley 1953-2025
Director James Foley has died at 71. In the 80s he was a frequent collaborator of Madonna's: directing her music videos for "Live to Tell", "Papa Don't Preach" and "True Blue", the movie At Close Range featuring "Live to Tell" and starring her then-spouse Sean Penn, and directing Madonna in Who's That Girl (one of the worst After Hours / Something Wild rip-offs of that era).
Al Pacino and Foley on the set of GGR
His magnum opus was the 1992 David Mamet theater adaptation Glengarry Glen Ross. What a cast and it was so quotable! Other notable films he did included the Chow Yun-Fat crime film The Corruptor produced by John Woo (not CYF's best but highly underrated) and the crime film Confidence (I attended a special screening of it in NYC with star Ed Burns doing a Q&A and he spoke highly of Foley).
Foley also dabbled in television including an episode of Twin Peaks, an episode of the anthology series Gun, and multiple episodes of House of Cards.
