At Doom’s Gate (part 3)
Victoria was pacing back and forth in her bedroom, the orange light of the sunset shining through the tall windows and creating a golden sheen in her chestnut hair as she passed by them. She went to sit on the bed and rested her heavy head in her palms, a deep sigh escaping her lungs.
“What in the Lord’s name am I going to do?” she mumbled in despair.
Suddenly a gust of wind swept through the room, rapidly gaining speed as a strange loud whirring sounded all around her. She jolted back and looked around the room in shock and confusion as she scrambled to find the source of the sound. Something started to materialize in front of Victoria’s bed. Once it had fully appeared, Victoria was able to get a good look at it. It was an 8 foot or 2.4 meter tall blue box that had a light on its roof and a black sign with white letters that read “Police Public Call Box.” Before she had enough time to fully process what just happened, one of the doors on the box opened up and two people stepped out of it. The first was an older looking man with thick curly silver hair, bushy eyebrows, pale skin, and strange clothing Victoria had never seen before. The second was a short young woman with shoulder-length dark brown hair, slightly tanned but fair skin, giant chocolate brown eyes, and clothing that was just as alien to Victoria.
“Ah! Your majesty!” The strange man said before bowing to her, the woman following suit. He spoke with a deep Scottish accent but his inflections and mannerisms seemed completely bizarre to Victoria.
“We heard you were in distress and we came to help,” the woman had a northern English accent, possibly Blackpool, Lancashire. She also behaved strangely, as if she were from a completely different world.
“W-who are you? How did you-” Victoria struggled to string together a coherent sentence as her brain worked overtime trying to process all of this new information.
“I’m the Doctor, and this is-”
“Clara Oswald. We’re time travelers who help people,” she cut the man off while he was speaking, a gesture that would normally alarm Victoria but she was currently too mentally preoccupied to notice.
“What do you mean ‘time travelers?’” Victoria asked.
“We use this blue box to travel through time and space. I won’t get into technicalities, it’d take too long to explain,” the Doctor said.
There was a moment of silence although it certainly didn’t feel silent to Victoria; the buzzing of her thoughts felt deafening to her as she struggled to comprehend her situation. She cautiously got up and walked over to the strange box, carefully scanning it up and down.
“Beautiful isn’t she? We just gave her a wash recently and I like to think we did a rather good job,” the Doctor said with a tinge of pride.
“Oi! You didn’t help clean her at all! You sat around ranting about Catherine de Medici and Teddy Roosevelt while I scrubbed off all that greasy stuff from our trip to that slime planet!” Clara yelled at him after giving him a light punch in the arm.
“I didn't do anything? Are you kidding me? Of course I did something, I was making sure you wouldn't get bored."
Clara scoffed and rolled her eyes.
“How did you know I was in distress?” Victoria asked.
The Doctor began to speak, “Oh, well we-”
“It’s a long story that involves a lot of technical stuff that would take too long to explain. It doesn’t matter, all that matters is you’re in distress and we came to help.” Clara cut the Doctor off yet again, causing him to get a bit annoyed.
“Come on, I wanted to explain it!” he whined.
“She has enough to think about right now. You can rant about that later,” Clara said to him firmly. She then turned back to Victoria with a warm smile. “Now let’s not focus on all of that right now, what do you need help with?”
Victoria stammered a bit as she tried to refocus her train of thought. “There have been many killings that have very suspicious and unexplainable circumstances. We’re not even sure if the attackers are human, or even any known animal. I was notified of this by the Chief of Police who asked that I help in any way I can. Here is the letter he sent me, it explains everything in detail.” She picked it up from her bed and handed it to Clara. The Doctor walked up to her and read it with her. Clara frowned as she skimmed through the words over and over again before handing it to the Doctor.
“Do you have any thoughts on this so far?” she asked him.
He took the letter and skimmed it a few times, his fuzzy grey eyebrows furrowed as he contemplated the words before him. After a while, he finally spoke up.
“Could you arrange for us to see the bodies in person or read the full case files? We’re going to need more information.”
“I could arrange that, I was going to do it with my husband actually. It will take some time for him to get used to you both though, he is a very skeptical person.”
“That won’t be a problem, I’ve met many people like Albert before.” the Doctor said.
“I find it interesting that a woman as confident in her own abilities as you would be so quick to trust total strangers,” Clara remarked with a light chuckle.
“Well, if I am honest…” she seemed almost ashamed of what she was about to admit, “I do not know how else to handle this. This is just as unexplainable to me as it is to the many detectives who have worked on it. Even my dearest Albert, as incredibly intelligent as he is, could not conjure even a hint of an explanation. I have nobody else to turn to so I will take any help I may be offered.”
“Well you can absolutely trust us. We have dealt with issues that are beyond anything you can imagine. There isn’t a problem we can’t fix. It may take a lot of time, blood, sweat, and tears but we will find a solution,” Clara assured her with a confident smile.
“Alright, I trust you,” Victoria relaxed a little but there was still a small voice in her head telling her to be wary of these strangers. Part of her suspected something was off about them; the circumstances were just too extraordinary. She’s despairing over something and suddenly two strangers claiming to be “time travelers” randomly appear and say they can solve her problems. It just seemed too good to be true.
