Okay, so I saw Iron Lung on opening day, absolutely loved it! And I've just been stewing in my thoughts and head canons ever since. A lot of them seem to be shared, since I've come across people who have similar opinions as me... For all but one. So, I figured I'd share!
I figured out how to add the cut just so I won't accidentally spoil it for anyone!
Okay so, the note being left bugs me, it has since the game. But, I had this thought for the game and it fits for the movie too!
We're explicitly told that AT-5, the blood moon that Iron Lung takes place on, is a relatively newer find. We're also told, through the note (or in the case of the movie the voice log) that the COI doesn't really care if you come back at all. If you're successful fine, if you're not, they don't really care either.
But there's a lot of nuanced little bits that just... Hit home for me and make by brain go overdrive.
Like that split moment of hesitation before Ava answers when Simon asks if they've tested the sub or not... To me, that didn't read as 'I'm about to lie to you'. We get the same hesitation from her later on when she's about to admit to not even knowing Simon's name.
To me, it reads more as a split moment where Ava's compartmentalization fails her. Where for just a second she sees the human behind the convict and has to tell the truth, has to face her own mortal flaws regardless of the mission.
To me, the pause says 'Yeah, this IS a human I'm sacrificing for the greater good, and I don't know his name, I DIDN'T WANT to know his name, because then it would matter'.
But at the beginning? When Simon asks if the sub had been tested before? It had been. But not here. It had been tested on AT-4, where Simon's 'brother' left the message to be found. Maybe his brother died down in the blood ocean of AT-4, running out of oxygen while he desperately searched for something interesting enough for the COI to bring him back up. Maybe when he was on his last light of oxygen and realized it would never happen is when he recorded his message and hid his pendant.
Why would the COI need to check over the ship? Check over the terminal? The convict suffocated, nothing but a dead body on the chair as he tried to find something.
Then they found the new blood ocean, they refilled the air tank and sealed Simon in.
He WAS the test. He was just in a vehicle that had been driven on a different track.
Let me know what you think! I'm pretty proud of this one! It makes my brain happy at least, lol!
