Ad-Hoc Altar to Loki

I’ve dabbled in Atheistic forms of Paganism and Witchcraft this past year but kind of fell off of it. That’s changed recently. After reading a rather infuriating post about witchcraft on a religious website (ex-orthodox jewish here) I made this impromptu altar to Loki.

I read that snakes and knots are associated with him, and the coiled rope is meant to evoke both. The Hershey’s kisses are because he enjoys sweet things. The fool card was suggested by a friend for my intentions with this altar. I wanted him to come (so to speak) and to spend a bit of time with me. Ditto with the red candle.

I found this fulfilling. I may present more offerings to him in the future

On Atheism & Magick

Being an Atheist only means one thing: I don't believe in Gods & Goddesses. It doesn't automatically make me a rational skeptic. It doesn't automatically mean I don't believe in magick or spirits. I do recognize the existence of consciousness, spirits, extraterrestrials, & the Elfae. I just don't see them as higher than mys'elf but equal to me, or rather a manifestation of my own consciousness. I believe in & practice magick, Weather Magick to be precise! I just simply do not recognize the existence of deities. I do not & have never needed deities to practice magick. My power is my own & does not come from a higher power. THAT is what being an Atheist Wizard means. I have the ability to use magick without the aid of spirits or deities! My magick, as a Weatherworker, directly influences the world around me here & now and does not take much time to manifest. It comes naturally to me. That's what Weatherworking does. It's a primal force that directly affects the world i.e. the weather. I have never needed deities or spirits to "aid my magick." I just do it mys'elf! So please stop insisting that to be a Witch/Wizard/Sorcerer that you have to "enlist the help of spirits/gods/goddesses" because I am living proof that's not true. There are such things as Atheist Witches/Wizards/Sorcerers. Science & Magick work well together if you know how to blend them.

So I am thing about what it would mean to start a witchcraft journey. I, as an atheist, would like to learn about it but have no idea where to start. I definitely do not believe in any deity, but have read that doesnt matter. I can not help but be intrigued by witchcraft. So, I need some recommendations on some books or guides or anything really to start some research. Any help would be appreciated.

Topic: Sigils

Recently I’ve been considering starting up a sort of ‘series’ where I research an aspect of witchcraft and write about it. It will be a way for me to learn more about areas that I haven’t explored before and it will also be fun to share my knowledge. I figured, however, that I would start with something that I am familiar with: sigils.

What is a sigil?

First, a sigil in the simplest sense is a symbol that has been created and imbued with intent for the purposes of magick. In other words, its a visual representation of the magician’s intent. Sigils can look like anything: they can be big, small, intricate, simplistic etc. Often though, the sigils I have seen and made have been small and abstract.

Making a Sigil

Making a sigil is quite easy, and in my opinion is one of the easiest and safest forms of magick. There are many ways one can go about creating a sigil, some methods are very fast whereas other methods of sigil creation take far longer. There is no right or wrong way to do it and you should choose whichever method seems to work best for you and don’t be afraid to change it up depending on your situation.

Step 1: Creating the Sigil

Creating a sigil simply involves drawing some shapes on a page, however, the following method is my favourite way of generating a sigil that is meaningful to me.

Ensure you are in a quiet, distraction-free environment.

(Optional) Cast a circle or do some other form of magick to set up a place for you to create and charge your sigil.

Determine your intent. Try to make your intent as short and simple as possible. Some examples could be: “I want to be able to focus more” or “I want to be more confident”.

Once your intent has been determined, pick out one, two if you absolutely must.

Write that word down, in your native language for starters and cross out all the vowels and repeated letters.

Write the new set of letters again, be it in the Latin (English) alphabet or another alphabet (eg. Theban Alphabet or Enochian)

Take the new letters, in whatever alphabet you’ve written them in and rearrange them however you would like. There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. Just mess with the shapes and sizes of each letter and don’t be afraid to combine and change letters to make completely new shapes.

You have now successfully created a sigil. The next step is charging it. I recommend doing this straight after creating the sigil.

Step 2: Charging the Sigil

While there are many, many ways to charge a sigil, the following is my preferred method.

Ensure you are still in a quiet space.

Sit quietly and meditate, imagining the sigil in your mind.

Visualise energy flowing into the sigil, causing it to glow and sear into your mind. Be sure to keep your intent in your mind as you do so.

Destroy your original sigil. The sigil is burned into your mind now and you can destroy it. I don’t always destroy my sigils though, I often leave them on things if I want them to affect that thing. For example, I may put a sigil to help me focus on my hand or arm.

Conclusion

I find sigils to be very easy to make and very effective, especially for things I want to change about me. I encourage everyone to at least give sigils a try because they can be pretty much anything. I will post more in the future about other methods of sigil creation.

Why I am an atheist and a witch (twin flame story)

Since I couldn't find much information on atheist witchcraft, I decided to, maybe, share my story. I was born into an atheistic family and society, most people here only have superstitions but never consistently worship a deity. So I was taught that, in a way, the concept of God was ridiculous and became very skeptical. But like any other child, I was fascinated by the concept of real magic. Except I carried that fascination on into adolescence. With some research, I regained my belief in faeries and other mystical creatures, and understood astral projections and the dimensions. That's when I came across witchcraft. I used to think only wiccans can be witches and delve into their religion. But I still can't wrap myself around the existence of God, I just don't believe. Then there was about a year where I just forgot about all this and lived my life like a normal teenager. Until I met him. I'm a very scientific person and never believed in something unexplainable. But when I saw him, there was no way for me to explain what I felt with logic. I was sent into a frenzy of confusion and intense feelings that I tried to brush off. Then, I was only twelve and I hadn't ever really taken my feelings seriously. He changed my life. I know it sounds cliche but he really did. Whenever I'm around him, I feel a rush of energy that helped me overcome my social anxiety. He changed my view of myself and gave me the confidence I needed. I felt like I've finally became functional because of him. Then, three years passed and that feeling still remained. I began high school and was parted from him, I fell into a stage of severe depression. I knew this wasn't right, it wasn't healthy that the last time I talked to him was five months ago and still a thought of him can occupy my brain and ruin my day. I did some more research and came across the term 'twin flame'. Not everyone believes in it because it's such a fluffy concept. But it finally helped me understand just what the hell is going on in my head. I studied soul work to control my depression and anxiety and once again came across witchcraft. It had made much more sense to me now that I've experienced spirituality first hand and within the community I found so many people who I deeply relate with: Introverts, empaths... To me, witchcraft is energy and soul work, connecting with the nature and elements and learning about otherworldly creatures. I hope this can be a reference for the atheists out there wondering how to persue witchcraft without a deity. Witchcraft, to me, is about working with the energy of the universe for you and your loved ones' benefits without harming anyone. Thank you for reading such a long post. Haha.
