So. I haven't been feeling well this week and there's been a ton of stress with family health issues so I have been trying to rest when I'm not working. Plus I'm starting a new job on Monday and my schedule will be in flux until I'm through training. So in order to adjust to my new schedule and (hopefully) get some more writing done so I have a buffer of chapters for when things get hectic again when I move house in a few months, I'll be taking a few weeks off posting for ATIMS.

I'm hoping to be back posting again before the end of April. I just need a moment to get my bearings. I appreciate all the support you guys have given me over the last few months! You guys are awesome and I'm so glad for the response this story has gotten!!

A Thorn In My Side, A.K.A a Dragon Age/Castle AU fic.

Varric hits some writers block shortly after he receives news of the failure of the first few chapters of Swords and Shields and decides he needs something new. Meanwhile, detective Cassandra Pentagast is assigned to a seemingly ordinary case that will change her life.When circumstances bring them together, Varric finds new inspiration for his next book and Cassandra finds a new thorn in her side.

Preview of Chapter one: Guild affairs

Cassandra and Nicoline hadn’t made it ten steps out the door before they were accosted by the same blonde dwarf from before.

“Finally!” he groaned as he stomped over towards them with a younger, annoyed looking dwarf in tow. Cassandra nodded for Nicoline to leave. She gave a grateful smile before heading towards her car. Cassandra could feel the blonde dwarf’s glare without looking at him, she braced for another argument.

“Can I help you?” she asked tersely.

“Yes, detective, you can.” he spat. He held up his phone. “I just got off the phone with your superiors, they’ve agreed to take on a guild representative for the duration of this case.” Cassandra’s jaw dropped.

“Excuse me?” she sputtered. The blonde dwarf rolled his eyes.

“Piraht Goka was a close friend to house Tethras. And with obvious foul-play involved the guild will not leave you morons to your own devices. So, to protect merchant guild interests, my brother will be accompanying you.” he gestured to the younger dwarf beside him.

“I- no, no! That’s impossible,” Cassandra insisted. “You are asking me to allow a civilian to take part in the investigation of a homicide case! It can’t be done!”

“According to Captain Corin and Commissioner Valen it can be done. And it will.” before Cassandra could protest further the blonde dwarf’s phone started ringing. He looked down at the caller ID and then back to Cassandra. “This is not up for discussion, detective,” he said before leaving to take the call. She huffed her frustration before turning to glare at the younger dwarf standing next to her. He had strawberry-blonde hair and a slightly crooked nose with a small scar across the bridge, like he’d taken a bad hit years prior. He wore a red V-neck shirt and jeans beneath a grey leather coat.

“You’ll have to forgive Bartrand, he can be a real shithead sometimes.” he reached out his hand “Varric Tethras, pleased to meet you,” Cassandra stared down at his waiting hand for a moment before looking away.

“You will not be accompanying me,” she said plainly. “There’s no way Corin would have approved this.”

“He did, I was listening in on the phone call. Bartrand had me call in a few favors with the viscount.”

“You were involved in this!” she accused. Varric sighed.

“Detective, when the head of a dwarven house tells you to do something, the last thing you say is ‘no’, especially if it’s Bartrand. He’s a real bastard when he’s pissed.” he pointed over at his brother. Cassandra turned to see him waving his hands dramatically as he shouted into his phone. He glanced over at her and glared when he caught her looking. “Trust me, detective, it's best to just go with it.” Cassandra took a deep breath and stared Varric down.

“Fine,” she said. “But you will have no part in the investigation, you will not speak to any of our witnesses or have access to any of the evidence. You will follow and observe-silently. Is that clear?”. Varric nodded.

“Loud and clear, detective.” He said he said with a mock salute. Bartrand stomped back over to them.

“Is everything resolved, detective?” he asked harshly.

“It would seem so,” she said. Bartrand sighed.

“Finally!” he said. Bartrand wasted no more time waiting around, he immediately rushed past Cassandra and Varric towards the parking lot.

Summary:

Canon compliant up to breaktime of 2x118.

The Mighty Nein defeat the Tombtakers, but Aeor rises. Caleb and Jester are separated from the Nein in the aftermath. They can only hope it won't be for long. They have a disaster to stop. And a lot to face before they're finished.

Officially hit 26k words and I'm not even done with chapter 6. It's growing and there are more sad parts now that I'm gonna have to WRITE. And I'm gonna cry the whole way through. This is Officially gonna be the longest story I've ever written. Because I'm expecting like 60-80k at this point. It was only supposed to be like 3 or 4 chapters. Remember? And then character development and plot and shit happened. Widojest is just so cute, guys. And painful. Like ow. Why do I do these things to myself?

I've been hit hard by life crap so the new chapter of ATIMS isn't ready for posting today. I'm going to hold off until next Thursday so I can deal with things and get the chapter finished.

Hey! I just wanted to let you know that I absolutely LOVE your writing style. "A Twist in My Story" is my absolute favorite Widojest-ish piece of writing. You've fleshed out the characters so well, your writing is so clean, and I cannot wait for it to come out every week. It's beautiful!!

I'm so glad the writing is clean. I've written this whole thing on my phone (and, mostly in the bath. How appropriate a word, "clean" is. Lol.) so far and it's unbetaed except for my last once over before posting. I did go to school for creative writing. Many many many moons ago. So maybe that's it? Idfk. Haven't done much writing in years.

I've tried so hard to do the characters justice, so I'm glad it's working. I'm glad you like it so much. You're so sweet! I look forward to posting every week! I'm gonna go scream into my pillow now.
