I feel strangely sad that Rin melted down Atlan’s trident ☹️

I understand the emotional growth it shows—Rin isn’t clinging onto past memories and is actually trying to do what’s best for herself. Not what others wanted or, god forbid, what she deluded herself into thinking that Atlan wanted.

But, it’s just so sad.

Atlan Trengsin had one thing left to him: his trident. There were no discernible ashes nor even a body of his. From what I remember, there wasnt a single thing left to him.

There was only his memory and his trident.

His memory is tainted by everyone who doesn’t know anything about him—who only saw him as a Speerly losing their mind(Something that everyone was already expecting). We literally see this POV through Nezha with all of his bullshit that he told Rin.

And then, his friends, the Cike? His last hope for a memory that would’ve been the closest to knowing him? All dead. Either, they are dead and gone and ashes to fade or they’re damn near there.

It’s just so sad that the last material thing—a Speerly made trident was melted down.

I didn’t really understand when people said that Rin was turning into what she hated, because, I’m being so deadass right now, she was always kinda fucked up.

That line of thought was mostly because I just finished The Poppy War and from what I can tell, in that book, Rin was truly just trying to do what she set out to do from the beginning: become strong and gain power. That’s why she took Lore, to understand her potential power. That’s why she followed Atlan too, even when she knew he was batshit crazy. Sure, things got messy with her learning she was Speerly but again, all her actions were to become strong.

HOWEVER, now that I started The Dragon Republic, she’s legit already what she hated. She hated drugs and opium because of her history with the Fangs but she’s literally an addict now. She hated Atlan because he was an addict too, but look where she is: exactly where he was. Atlan thought she could’ve been better and stronger but she’s deadass going down the same exact path of rage and revenge as him.

Not only with the drugs, theres also the MOTHERFUCKING GENOCIDE?? Guys, I fear her killing Mugen civilians was not on my bingo card. She hated the Federation for what they did to her ancestors and Nikara in Golyn Niis, but LOOK WHERE THE FUCK SHE IS: doing the EXACT GODAMN THING.

I feel like it’s really bad that I lwk wanna read book 2 just to see if there’s more Atlan content

Like everything about him is fucking tragic!! Genuinely, not only is he a victim of genocide, he was deadass in inhumane experiments when he was 4. He saw other people being cut up, examined, and who knows what other horrible things! He’s been suffering with an addiction to drugs his whole life, because of the fucking experiments! And then, instead of being able to heal or even get proper help to try to move on, the academy, Sinegard, just sharpened him into a weapon because he was Speerly. Because, not only did he carry the standard Speerly rage of injustice, but he also carried the rage from his childhood! Everything he felt was literally forced upon him, and then manipulated to best serve others. Honestly, how else could he have possibly ended up with all that godamn fucking trauma?

Death was the only way for him to have peace and rest—and he knew it.
