Chapter 1- Across the Pond
The wind was cool and damp. It carried the smell of the approaching clouds in the distance. The day hadn’t been nice at all. It was cold and gray. The usual chirping of the birds was absent and the cloud that had been creeping in all day hinted as to why. It was noon now, in the month of June. A man with a dog on a leash briskly walked by as, he eyed the young mother sitting on her porch with her 16 month old son grabbing at a piece of fuzz floating in the wind that was picking up steadily.
“Morning Ma’am,” the man said with a slight nod in her direction.
“Morning Sir, getting darker every minute. I would walk quickly if I were you,” the lady responded.
“It is and I am.”
“Doggie!” said the little boy.
“Ey! It is, would you like to pet him?” He asked, partially to the little boy and partially to his mother who was walking quickly behind the curious boy.
“Louis! Wait a minute! Wait for me!” She said.
Louis had already kneeled down on the ground in front of the dog and held out his hand. Slowly, calmly, cautiously, the dog pointed out its nose into the little boy’s hand. His black hair had a certain shine to it that completely and utterly fascinated Louis.
“What is his name, Lou?” asked his mother. The boy brought his head up to look at the man holding onto the leash of the dog.
“Lou,” said the man. “His name is Lou.”
Louis, at this moment, became over joyed that he and the dog practically shared a name. He wasted no time quickly wrapping his small hands around the dog’s neck and pulling the poor thing into a head lock. Louis pulled the fur and held on tight to the little squirming terrier as it wiggled and fought to release itself from the hands of his attacker. When Louis wouldn’t let go, the dog growled and nipped at him. Louis flew backwards and sought protection behind his mother’s legs.
“Lou, you can’t grab the puppy like that. He doesn’t like that,” said Louis’ mom as the man was sternly scolding his dog for scaring the boy.
“But I love him!” cried out Louis.
“Oh don’t worry he just got over excited. That’s all,” said the owner of the dog. “I must be going, though. Those clouds are approaching fast.”
“Thank the nice man for letting you pet his doggie,” Lou’s mother said, now holding the boy in her arms.
“I don’t want too!” sobbed Louis still traumatized. “I hate that doggie.”
“Aw, don’t say that Lou,” she said, before adding a “Thanks sir. See you around,” the man said as he walked away. She took her son and started to return back to their spot on the porch when a car pulled into house next to them. Suddenly a wave of excitement washed over her. The car had been gone for a day and a half now and its return brought good news.
The car door opened and a young man stepped out and headed for the other door revealing a beautiful young lady holding a little baby in her arms.
“Oooh!” squealed Louis’ mom. “You are back! How did it go?”
The couple looked up and smiled from ear to ear. “Jay! Hello! It was great!”
“I am so glad, can I see it?”
“Of course,” said the husband, carefully taking the bundle from his less than willing wife. He brought the baby over to Jay and handed it to her.
“Boy or girl?” she asked him.
“Girl,” he smiled sweetly at the little girl in his neighbors arms. “How you doing Lou?”
“The doggie bit me,” he replied with a sad look on his face that was almost comical.
“It did? That’s not good. Do you want to meet your new neighbor?”
Louis nodded and waited for the man to take ahold of his daughter and sit on the ground next to him. He was a little shy at first, but soon warmed up seeing she was of no threat. Louis reached out his hand and gently stroked the baby’s cheek. He smiled at her. She was so small and cute. “I like it.”
“Good because you are going to have to look after her. She needs a nice strong man to protect her,” said the man.
“From the doggies,” Louis continued.
“Yup,” laughed the man, “from the doggies.”
The man looked up into the sky. The clouds had faded away into nothing. It was still quite cool, but the sun had at least started to show through the sky.
“Guess the weather wants to welcome the new comer with some sun shine,” said Jay smiling.
“I guess so,” the man smiled down at his new daughter.
“Would you guys like to come over for tea?” asked the wife as she gracefully walked over to the group.
Before anyone could answer Louis said yes.
“Oh I am sure McKenzie would love that,” she said, picking up her baby.
“What a beautiful name!” said Jay. Louis was still interested in the little bundle as they made their way into the house for tea.
McKenzie. Louis liked that.
