Ch182, A “Thanksgiving” chapter
Oddly enough, we didn’t get any Halloween chapter last month or this… but we did, in a roundabout way, get a Thanksgiving chapter this month.
It’s just hidden in Baldo’s backstory. He’s descended from Pilgrims — the great grandfather or great-great grandfather who came to the new world to escape religious persecution. The part about the natives helping the Pilgrims, who didn’t know about a lot of the native wildlife (like edible plants and game), survive in their new settlements. This is the basic story of the “First Thanksgiving”. It’s the cute, white-washed version most Americans are taught in school (and church).
FYI, there’s no account of the first several Thanksgiving celebrations including turkeys; that came later. The turkey 🦃 almost became our national bird, instead of the bald eagle 🦅. More realistic accounts of the first Thanksgiving meals include things like venison 🦌, oyster 🦪 and other seafood 🦞 dishes, and fish 🐟. At least Yana-san said the natives supplied beans and grain, etc… not turkeys. 😮💨 That’s generally true… when relations were good, or at least tentative. Some of the native tribes around the areas where the Pilgrims landed and settled were pretty friendly, though, and were generally helpful… until the settlers got too greedy and aggressive….
I hope that Yana-san doesn’t end up giving the natives a stupid reason to attack; I hope she does them some justice by making it retaliation against the settlement/village for something horrible the village did to the native tribe. And Baldo’s family just gets swept up in the mess simply by association. That would be pretty realistic.
The only reason I could see for making it a senseless attack is if this is another tribe that has come through, a particularly warring tribe, not the more friendly ones Baldo was used to….
