the whole phantomhive household is really all about people who were "the last of their kind" or alone.

ciel is the only surviving member of his line, finny is the only surviving test subject from the lab, Bard is the only one left of his comrades and his family is also dead, snakes "family" got obliterated and he's the only one left, Tanaka is the only surviving member of phantomhive staff, mey rin's an orphan whose friends got killed off, and Sebastian as a demon is simply a solitary creature with no significant ties to anything

so they all find meaning in each other and make up the heart of the story.

of course most of them find meaning specifically in ciel but ciel also finds meaning in all of them, maybe not equally but still. very powerful thing.
