Metaphorical Bridge
When you’re standing on the edge of your metaphorical bridge and everyone around you screams for you to stop but you don’t know how
You don’t know how to safely put your foot back on the solid ground and you realize you haven’t been safe for a while
At some point you walked on to the bridge then put your foot on to the rail and as you climbed the edge you ignored the voice in your head saying something wasn’t right
As you stood on the edge you realize everything you told yourself was a sweet lie because you couldn’t handle the truth
While everyone else watched in terror as you slipped off the edge you felt free for the first time in a while
The air around your body not longer felt constricting or stiff anymore but like so many other things you misjudged
Because you didn’t float through the air like you always imagined
Gravity caught up and the realization set in that hitting the water really fucking hurts
It takes away some part of your innocence, it takes away a part of you
Piece by piece you deconstruct yourself in the water to make yourself seem a little less bright to not attract any unwanted attention
When you break the surface and pull yourself out of the murky waters and attend to your internal wounds the atonement begins
You have to figure out how to move on from the people you love watching you fall
You have to answer to the ones who love you why you even climbed on the ledge in the first place
But you can’t even explain it to yourself because in many ways you aren’t anyone anymore
You are the shell of the person you used to be
The person before you fell, the person who decided to climb on the railing before everything was too much
I wish I had the answers for why it happened but they never come
It never makes sense because there will never be a valid explanation for something that's invalid
Why We Love God We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19). Since loving God is the evidence that he loves you with electing love (Romans 8:28, etc.), the assurance that God loves you with electing love cannot be the ground of your love for him. Our love for him, which is the evidence of our election, is our spiritually apprehending the all-satisfying glory of this God. It is not first gratitude for a benefit received, but recognition and delight that to receive him would produce overwhelming gratitude. This recognition and delight is, or should be, according to Scripture, attended immediately with the assurance that he does in fact give himself to us for eternal enjoyment. The gospel call (Christ died for sinners; believe on him and you will be saved) is a call not first to believe that he died for your sins but that, because he is the kind of God who redeems at such a cost and with such wisdom and holiness, he is worthy of trust and he is a truly satisfying repose for all my longings. Believing (that is sensing, apprehending) this is then immediately attended with the confidence that we are saved and that he did die for us, since the promise of salvation is given to those who thus believe. The core of Christian Hedonism is thus at the very heart of what saving faith is and what it means to truly “receive” Christ, or to love God. Compare: “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). This may mean that God’s love enables our love for him through the incarnation and atonement and work of the Holy Spirit, not that our motive to love is first his making much of us. Or it may mean that in beholding and spiritually apprehending God to be the kind of God who loves sinners like us with such amazingly free grace and through such stunningly wise and sacrificial means of atonement, we are drawn out to delight in this God for who he is in himself, rather than taking the sentence to mean that we love him first because we find ourselves personally and particularly chosen by him. First it puzzles. Did Christ have to cease from sin? No! “He committed no sin” (1 Peter 2:22). Then it clicks. When we arm ourselves with the thought that Christ suffered for us, we realize that we died with him. “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness” (1 Peter 2:24). When we die with him we cease to sin. It’s just like Romans 6. “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. . . . So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:6–7, 11). Peter says, “Arm yourselves with this thought!” Paul says, “Consider yourselves dead!” The weapon for our vacation is a thought/consideration. When the temptations of Satan come — to lust, to steal, to lie, to covet, to envy, to retaliate, to put down, to fear — arm yourself with this thought: When my Lord suffered and died to free me from sin, I died to sin! When Satan says to you, Why deny yourself the pleasure of lust? Why deal with the mess you could avoid by lying? Why not go ahead and get that harmless luxury you covet? Why not seek justice by returning the same hurt you received? Answer him: The Son of God suffered (really suffered!) to deliver me from sinning. I cannot believe he suffered to make me miserable. Therefore, what he died to purchase must be more wonderful than the pleasures of sin. Since I trust him, my susceptibility to your allurements has shriveled up and died. Satan, be gone! My mouth doesn’t drool any more when I walk by your candy store. "The hardest thing in this life is learning to forgive yourself. You're not perfect, no one is perfect. You're not Jesus but he can help you feel consolidation for your sins. Jesus is quick to forgive, you just need to forgive yourself." -my wise mother
