Alice had had a relatively easy labour with Neville. He hadn’t been weeks early or weeks late, he hadn’t come in the middle of the night, Alice hadn’t needed a C-Section. All in all he had been an easy birth for them both. They were hoping it would be the same with their next baby.
So far Estelle was two weeks late and it was making Frank nervous. He worried about the baby, about Alice, about Neville, about anything he could possibly worry about. Sometimes, and he would never ever admit this if you were to ask, when Alice was asleep, he’d talk to her belly and tell the baby to hurry up. He had an inkling Alice knew he was doing this, especially since she knew he did it with Neville. Alice tried to calm Frank down but it wasn’t working very well, he spent most of his time pacing around the room or playing far too extravagant games with Neville to clear his mind. He would have loved to work to keep him busy, and he was sure Alice would have loved the peace as well, but had decided to take this time off just in case Alice went into labour while he was too far to get.
Alice couldn’t comprehend why Frank was so nervous, two weeks late wasn’t a big deal. The reason Frank was nervous was a very stupid and embarrassing reason. Frank was scared. He was scared that after everything going so perfectly the first time around it couldn’t possibly go so perfectly again. They were so happy, so amazingly happy, surely their luck would run out soon. There was just no way they could have a baby like Neville, survive the war and have another perfectly healthy baby. Now Frank knew this was a ridiculous way of thinking, that he was being incredibly stupid, but he couldn’t bring himself to not think that way.
So when Alice went into labour at three o'clock in the morning he was freaking out a small bit.
“Okay I’ve got everything.”
“Neville?”
“Shit.” Frank hurried into their sons room, picking him up and hoping he’d stay asleep which was all round stupid of Frank to hope since they had to apparate. He carried Neville against his chest, going back out to Alice.
“Now I have everything.” Alice wasn’t listening though, she was already going outside so they could apparate. Frank followed close behind, trying to hurry her.
“Alice-”
“Shush Frank.” He pressed his lips together as she took his arm and he brought them to the hospital. The plan once they got to the hospital was Alice would get taken in by the healer and Frank would bring Neville to his mums. The first part of the plan went smoothly. One second he was explaining what was going on to a healer and the next second it was just Frank and Neville. Neville, who had now woken up, stared up at Frank with big blue eyes and Frank was very grateful that he wasn’t crying. This meant it was time to undergo part two of the plan; bring Neville to his mums.
He apparated to his mums, using his key to let himself in. Once he was in he realised he’d have to wake his mum to let her know which wouldn’t be a fun task. He decided he’d put Neville down to sleep before he woke her. He brought Neville down to a room that had become his own with a cot and various toys thrown about the place. Frank held Neville close for a minute, muttering to him in a soft voice. “Next time we see you, little man, you’re going to be a big brother. You’re going to have a little brother or sister to look after. Mummy’s going to be very tired though so you’ll have to be very nice to her. And we’ll be spending lots of time with the new baby but that doesn’t mean we love it anymore than we love you.” He looked down at Neville and noticed he had fallen back asleep. He smiled and kissed his head before placing him gently in the cot and tucking him in. Frank woke up his mum and told her what was going on and hurried to leave. He checked his watch. He had been gone ten minutes, you couldn’t have a baby in ten minutes could you?
When Frank reached the hospital again Alice seemed to be the same way she had been when he left but reached out to join her hand with his.
“Neville?” She asked, a little breathlessly.
“Fast asleep,” he replied softly as he kissed her head and pushed her hair out of her face.
“Can you tie up my hair?” Frank chuckled slightly and nodded, taking the hair tie off her wrist.
He sat on the edge of her bed by her pillow as he pulled her hair back from her face and tying it up into a short ponytail. He stood back beside her just as another contraction hit and she grabbed his hand, squeezing it tightly.
A few hours later, after what the nurse called a quick labour (Alice and Frank disagreed), a gorgeous baby girl was being placed into Alice’s waiting arms. Frank would later wonder what could have possibly been going through Alice’s mind when she was placed into her arms because Frank’s mind felt like it was imploding. He was in awe of the tiny little girl. Here she was, just as perfect as Neville. Frank rubbed her small cheek with his little finger as she made quiet mewing sounds and Alice held her close. He moved his finger to her hand and she clutched it instantly, still making small noises at them. Frank swore their were absolutely no tears in his eyes as he kissed the top of Alice’s head who then looked up at him with a smile so big it nearly split her face in two. He beamed back and kissed her softly on the lips.
“What should we call her?" Alice said quietly, breaking the silence that had fallen. They had been discussing baby names for months, for both a boy or a girl, trying to find one they both liked.
"Iris, Estelle and Aria were our final choices for a girl,” Frank murmured. They both looked down at her for a few seconds and then spoke in unison.
“Estelle.”
Before they even had time to marvel at their synchronicity a nurse came bustling in looking slightly annoyed.
“There’s an Augusta in the waiting room,” she said in a would be calm sort of voice. “She insisted I let you know she was here right away regardless of how busy I was!” The nurse gave a small sigh. “Would you like me to send her in?” Frank smiled at the thought of his mother harassing the poor woman, he knew she meant well… More or less.
“Please do,” he replied with a nod, only taking his eyes off Estelle for the briefest of moments.
Not five minutes later his mum came hurrying into the room, holding a very confused looking Neville in her arms. As soon as Neville spotted Frank he held his arms for his dad and called for him. Frank took him with a grin as his mum rushed over to Alice’s side with coos and kisses for Estelle. Frank took a small step back and talked quietly to Neville as Alice informed Augusta all about Estelle.
“That’s your new baby sister,” Frank said softly. Neville had a look of deep concentration on his face as though trying to figure what was going on. “Her name is Estelle,” Frank went on when Neville stayed quiet.
“Eh.. Lle..,” Neville whispered. Frank chuckled lightly and kissed his head.
“That’s right, little man.”
“Elle, mama!” He said louder, more confidant now. Alice grinned and nodded as Frank sat Neville down on the bed at Alice’s feet. Neville quickly crawled up the bed to sit on Alice’s knee and watch Estelle carefully.
“Baba?” He asked, looking at Alice uncertainly. She smiled and agreed before giving Estelle to Frank. While Alice hugged her son and pulled him properly onto her lap, explaining all about his sister and that things would be a little different from now on, Frank looked down lovingly at the girl in his arms.
He sat down carefully in the seat by Alice’s bed and started to talk in a low voice to her.
“Hello Estelle,” he almost whispered, his voice soothing. “You’ve kept us waiting for a very long time. I’ve been worried sick waiting for you. Your Mummy hasn’t though, she knew you were okay, you just liked in there too much to come out yet she’d say. I think she was right. She’s a lot smarter than me, your mum, but don’t tell her I said that. She thought you were a boy though so at least I’m smarter when it comes to guessing genders.” Frank smiled, looking at the other half of his family on the bed for a moment before looking back at Estelle. “I don’t think all the worrying I’ve been doing is going to stop any time soon. And now I’ve got two babes to worry about, I’m going to drive Alice mad.” He pulled Estelle closer and kissed her. “I already love you so much. My little girl. My gorgeous little girl. I love you so so much, Estelle.”
Frank, who had been completely lost inside his own bubble, gave a small start when someone spoke beside him.
“You know I expect at least one more grandchild,” Augusta said, looking down at him with a pretend serious expression. Frank grinned with a small laugh. “We’ll see.” His mum smiled back at him and gave his shoulder as squeeze before walking away.
“Come on, Nev, let’s let your Mum have some rest, she didn’t get a nice night like you, sleepy head.” Neville looked upset at the idea of leaving his parents and held out his arms to Frank again. But it wasn’t Frank he wanted this time.
“Elle!” He called as he held out his hands.
“Alright little man, say goodbye to your sister,” Frank said standing up and bringing Estelle over. Just as he was handing Estelle to Alice a flash went off.
“Trust me, you’ll want this picture in years to come,” Augusta said, shrugging slightly as she put her camera down. Frank just gave his head a small shake as Alice laughed, taking Estelle. Neville leaned over her, holding on to Frank’s arm for support.
“Bye bye, Elle,” he whispered before stretching up to give Alice a kiss and then Frank lifted him up once more.
“I’ll come to Nana’s and get you soon, alright Neville?” Neville nodded his head with a smile and went over to his grandmother.
And in that moment Frank was certain there was no one who could possibly be happier than he was.
