Ableton Live - making bass mono
For several reasons the bass range of a song should be kept in mono, especially when it might be cut on vinyl one day. A lot of synthesizer presets contain heavy stereo low end though and also some good sounding effects on the bassline might make it stereo. So how do people deal with this?
A good mastering engineer can process the signal so that the bass will be mono after the treatment. Along with this goes a fundamental change in sound and what you liked about your mixdown before might be lost after the processing. Not an ideal solution.
Changing the bass range to mono while you create the sounds or at least during the mixdown session will let you hear what's really going on. This can be done with a couple of VST plug-ins. It can also be achieved by combining some of Ableton Live's standard tools.
