I just finished listening to today's episode of Crime Junkie & maybe I'll change my opinion but I'm a bit disappointed. What I've always loved about Crime Junkie is the focus on the victims, the fact that as a podcast listener you can make an impact & there has always been this overarching theme of community & justice. Now granted, I'm not from the USA but if I as a Swede get that feeling, I'm sure it's even stronger for their listeners in the USA.
However, with today's episode & the new initiatives they talked about, it feels as if they have fallen into the trap of "True Crime as entertainment" that so many before them have done. Like... Live-watching, dissecting & commenting on a criminal trial as it's happening is not why I'm listening nor following Crime Junkie. Don't get me wrong, I love when they do case updates about things they've covered in the past. But there is a difference between updating on what has happened & livestreaming a trial while snacking popcorn as if it's a TV show.
They did mention that this is something new they're testing out & I hope the whole Audiochuck/Crime Junkie team realise that this is a mistake & a path they shouldn't go down. Especially considering the fact that Ashley herself has made a thing of pushing for "consuming True Crime ethically & responsibly" (I don't think that's the exact words she has used but something along those lines) I would hate for them to throw away the Crime Junkie legacy & the impact they've had like this
