on today's episode i'll be recommending yet another musical to my fellow theatre geeks, this time featuring:
the underrated puppet musical
i'm aware this musical isn't as obscure and unknown as the others i've recommended so far but it deserves so much more love and attention than it gets.
so it's basically a parody of show like sesame street and the muppets, which typically have a younger audience. this show however aims for the opposite audience. considering the street system where avenue a is the fanciest and most expensive, you can only imagine what avenue q is going to be like. the show follows the lives of the residents of avenue q and tackles serious and important subjects like racism, internalized homophobia and unemployment in a light-hearted manner, but also not so serious subjects, like how loud you're allowed to be when you're having sex, a kind of german sadism and porn.
it was written by jeffrey whitty (who worked on bring it on: the musical with lin manuel miranda and tom kitt--who wrote the songs for next to normal) and robert lopez (who co-created the soundtrack for the book of mormon and frozen). jeffrey actually got actors that used to work on sesame street for the show
the show is hilarious, the songs are great i always recommend it to everyone (but do keep in mind that it does bring up mature content, so if you're underage this porbably isn't is the best musical for you). no bootlegs here tho.
also, avenue q can be a great source for audition material. since it's not that well known, not only the songs but the monologues too can be a great choice. the songs are really catchy too, and even though the show doesn't have a lot of dancing, i've done a dance audition to the avenue q theme song before.
so what are you waiting for. go watch it!
