“Come to lay down the edict Come for the spoils Come for the temple attendants Anointed in oils Come flanked by your big guns Ride with the pack Come screaming for tribute Go out on your back.”

Okay I’ve been doing a deep dive into Songs for Pierre Chuvin recently and I’m emotional.
The whole album is set in the 400s-ish and focuses on pagans getting forced out by the new religion, Christianity.
And the whole album is from their point of view, and they keep touching on that their cultures and communities are disappearing, but one day they will return (Last Gasp at Calama, “Carthage will rise again one day”). Sometimes they fight for it back (Aulon Raid) and sometimes they are just waiting for their religions to eventually return while still believing (Exegetic Chains)
But while the characters in the stories are in the midst of their history and don’t know how it will turn out, if the pagans with survive, or if Christianity will really be the dominant power, the people listening do. Because we have the benefit of being in the future and looking back to see that they didn’t win. No one believes in the Greek gods anymore.
One line that hit me really hard was in Hopeful Assassins of Zeno, “How long till the snake devours its tail? Longer than we think”. Bc its way longer than they think. It’s been 1600 years.
Another really tough part is the whole song of of Exegetic Chains. The singer talks about how nature, such as the shadows under the trees, are “the labors of Hercules”. Even though his religion is prosecuted he keeps the beliefs alive in little ways. But it doesn’t last.
The whole song “Their Gods Dont have Surgeons” is just a really tough story as well. “Give me back my community”
I feel like the album isn’t getting a lot of attention but it’s honestly really good, and has a really interesting story. The people these stories are about are from so long ago that their pain might not even seem real, but this album shows it really well.
Anyway. Thinking about Pagans. ;-;
Me and my crew,
We will deal with you
