hnnnnn my mother and my little nephew are coming to visit and this is lovely and nice and good but it means I need to rearrange my bookshelf so all the grownup books are up high out of Nephew’s reach…

And as much as I want to encourage any interest he has in reading he’s six, he’s got sticky six year old fingers he’s going to get my books sticky 😭

WAIT HE LIKES LEGOS maybe i buy him a big cool LEGO thing and like… i can put on an audiobook while we build stuff?

(this doubles an an excellent way to get out of socializing with the adults)

Chat is six years old too young for Redwall? Is Clooney too scary? Nephew is kinda an iPad baby and my sister isn’t particularly attentive I can’t imagine he hasn’t seen/heard worse?

My nephew turned 18 today. I’m so excited to watch as his future unfolds. Though I do miss the little 4 year old who called me on the phone so often that I had to ask his dad to limit it to every other day instead of every single day. But I’m so happy for all the things his future holds. And I will love him every single day, in every single one of those futures, no matter which one this multiverse plays out as.

Finally met my new “niece” today! I promised to introduce her to all the things her mama says No to. Cant wait to spoil her by taking her all the places, buying her all the things, letting her stay up too late, eat too much sugar - all the good aunting stuff.

Sneak peek on the set of a new project I’ve got in the works today! I’ve had some questions lately about advice for balancing work/creative life with being an Auntie (or parent). “Balance” is something I’m the WORST at and I’m only Ransom’s aunt, but I’ve had an active co-parenting role in his life. He’s grown up coming to work with me, being in my lap when I paint, or creating right along my side. Swipe to see him on set with me today 📱😂💕. We FaceTime almost every day and it’s really important to both of us. It takes practice with kids, because communicating remotely is something you both have to become good at. Ransom knows that just because my eyes and hands are busy, it doesn’t mean my ears and heart aren’t his. He chatters away while I work, shows me things, we play, I hide things for him to find, read him books, and we draw together. It gives my mom a little break, and I can help support her when his sass-meter has swung to the left. I’m not sure how useful (at all! 😂😩) any of this is to you guys who have sent me messages or left questions on posts. Me as an “aunt”

I was given possession of my very small baby niece for a large part of today and by very small I mean she was born at the beginning of April so VERY SMALL

Anyway this is what I did as her “Aunt” (I need a non-binary word here):

Read her stories from Neil Gaiman’s “Norse Mythology” and if you aren’t reading stories to small babies that involve the words “fountains of blood” you aren’t Aunting correctly.

Also she loved it and went to sleep to soothing stories about Giant murder and only got fussy if someone stopped me to ask me a question.

Then later when I had her again I sang her lullabies and she only started crying when her mom took her back because we had to leave. So I’m her favourite as it should be.

In between times I taught her sister who is almost two to call my husband by a nickname he dislikes so he asked her who Auntie Pain in the Neck was and she proudly said my name and it was the most hilarious thing ever.  I also got cuddles from her but mostly she followed Kiddo around yelling their name. Kiddo had to hide upstairs taking a “nap” and even then she was asking where they were. (Note Kiddo loves Older Niece but is an only child and was getting overwhelmed)

Also read one of the norse myths to Kiddo and they were very pleased and wanted to hear all of them. I am very pleased.

Just asked my niece (8) if she had any questions re my surgery. She had 2.

How long will it take?

And who will be taking care of our pets during it? She asks the important stuff.
