of rat circuses, dogs of war and pig farming... it's mad to the max villany!!!
“Max is Back – and Tina’s Got Him!” Released in North American cinemas forty years ago today (10 July 1985): Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. I’m so old at this point, I can actually remember seeing this as a teenager on its original release at a drive-in cinema in Renfrew, Ontario. As I recall, I was disappointed that Thunderdome was so much less gritty and hardcore than the first two Mad Max movies (it featured a gang of cute orphans, like a bad 1960s Elvis movie!) and – much as I venerated rhythm and blues diva Tina Turner - I hated the big corporate stadium rock power ballad “We Don’t Need Another Hero” (especially when the children’s choir kicks in – ugh! In retrospect, the song foreshadowed Turner’s post-Private Dancer musical direction). On the plus side: as Aunty Entity, this was Turner’s first movie role since she memorably played the Acid Queen in Ken Russell’s Tommy ten years earlier, and she looked fierce in her post-apocalypse look of chainmail and punky white fright wig with the shaved-back Mohawk hairline.
