Auron/Lulu One-Shot | "If Only" / "Time On Our Side"
@postalninja @auroraarmlet and all my other AurLu shippers - hope you like this one <3
The airship settled on the ground, the feeling of relief washing over everyone now that the battle was done and they could finally get some rest albeit not for long. Tidus knew he had little time left in Spira with Yuna, which showed in the way he gazed at her, and he slipped his hand into hers. Their eyes met, and their feelings for each other were clear as day without them needing to utter a word. Auron sloped off to be alone, as he so often did, so no-one really thought anything of it. It was just him being himself, needing his own space for a while. Although they could rest, Rikku paced a little as she was agitated about what was to come. Lulu did her best to talk her into a calmer state, and eventually Rikku was at ease enough to take a seat. Wakka left to another part of the airship to go and talk to his blitzball friends that were there, in case it all went wrong against Sin; for all he knew, he would soon never see them again, so he made the most of the time he had.
Now that Lulu was not distracted by pacifying Rikku, she was left with nothing but her thoughts. Pondering on how things were, how they could be, and on some matters she had thought about before whenever she had a peaceful moment. She thought about her ex, Chappu, and she began to contemplate on her relationship with his brother. Upon thinking, she did realise it was a little strange for her to be with the brother of her ex and she wondered why. Was it the similarity to Chappu? Perhaps the likeness helped to fill the hole he left behind, as she was still entrenched in grief when she began to date Wakka. It began to make sense to her why she and Wakka had never been love’s young dream, why they were always bickering over everything and had never been particularly intimate. After all, she had grown up with Wakka so perhaps he was more like a brother to her and therefore better suited as a friend rather than a lover. She realised, too, that she had been projecting when she kept reminding Wakka that Tidus was not Chappu; it was not just him trying to fill the void left behind by loss. Now didn’t seem like the right time to end it with Wakka, though, despite all her realisations, yet it was what she would have done if things were different and she had the time.
There was someone else that did make her heart flutter and race, that she had secretly developed feelings for, but she knew it could never be. He would never feel the same, nor could she break Wakka’s heart at this moment. All she could do was ponder, imagine. Thoughts of him consumed her, and she began to wonder what he was doing for all this time. She missed him. After making an excuse to everyone so she could leave for a while, rising to her feet, she exited the main area to find him. He was often through the first door, stood leaning against the wall and in deep thought, but he was not in his usual spot. A little confused and needing to find him, she continued to the next area where she found Rin and strangely Kimahri wasn’t there though he usually was. After enquiring, hearing that Rin had no idea of Auron’s whereabouts, she was left wondering where he could have gotten to. She looked all around, checking every section, but still she did not find him. Eventually she saw Wakka and his friends, and he smiled as he noticed her walk in.
“Hey, Lu!” he greeted her brightly, before he noticed that she seemed on edge. “You alright?”
“Have any of you seen Sir Auron?” she asked.
“Nope,” Wakka replied, “Why d’ya wanna know?” Lulu paused a moment.
“No reason,” she sighed. Wakka was confused as she turned to leave again, but he just shrugged and carried on his conversation about the game in Luca. Lulu exited, slowly walking along the corridor as she wondered where to look for him, and soon she was met with Kimahri and it seemed it was her he wanted to see.
“Kimahri give this,” he said as he held out a folded note to her, “From Sir Auron.” Lulu was stunned a moment, before she reached out her hand and took the note from him.
“Thank you, Kimahri,” she told him sincerely. He gave her a nod to say he accepted her gratitude, and then he left her to read the note he had passed on to her. She found somewhere to seat herself, wondering what this letter could say as she looked at her name on the front, and she carefully unfolded the paper even though she was keen to do so because she didn’t want to rip it. She figured it had to be of importance for Auron to write something for only her to see. Upon opening it, she immediately noticed how neatly it was written as though a lot of time had been spent on it. Then, she began to read the words in front of her.
Lulu,
I have been staring at this for far too long trying to find the right words. Perhaps they don’t exist, but I have to find a way to say what I’m about to say. Forgive me, as I am not used to what I am attempting to do. I can only hope I do not get this all wrong.
I have a confession to make. A rather big confession, one that I have kept inside for far too long and now it has to be said as I do not have much time. I am unlikely to get another chance to say this. I have spent much of my time ruminating about how to tell you this, no way seeming right, so I have decided to just say it somehow. I just need to say it.
Ever since the first time I laid eyes on you, I have thought that you are the most beautiful woman in all of Spira, even more beautiful than the Moonflow and all its glowing lights. The more I have spent time with you on this journey, the more I have thought this about you. I hide my eyes, but they are always on you when I can afford to let myself be distracted. Now I know you, I see the beauty you have inside and I wish I could discover more of it by spending more time with you. If only things were different.
The way I feel around you is like nothing I have ever known before. Butterflies dance inside while my heart races, and I feel safe when you are next to me even in battle. When you are beside me, all I want to do is be closer to you. I am not usually the hugging type, as you well know, but I just want to hold you when you are with me. This is even more true when I see you are upset or scared, and believe me I see it even when you are calm on the outside. I hide it the same way so I can see it easily in you, and I want to take care of you every time I do. If only I could.
I know this is the wrong time, but it is also the right time as it is my only chance to get this off my chest. I am aware that you are with Wakka and there is no way you would ever reciprocate these feelings, but I couldn’t ever go to the Farplane having this secret inside. It was not something I wanted to take with me, as I want to be at peace when I go. To be truly peaceful, I must be honest. This had to be said. I don’t expect anything from you, I just needed you to know what you mean to me before I leave everything behind.
If only things could be different and I could stay. If only we had time on our side. If only I could get closer to you, have a future with you, grow old with you. I wish for so much to be different, Lulu, more than you will ever know. Thank you for bringing me happiness along this journey without even realising it. Thank you for being a good friend. I hope you and Wakka will be happy, and that you will be well after I have gone. Look after yourself, find happiness wherever you can, and do not let anything stand in the way of your dreams. Live your life fully, the life that I can never have.
Auron
X
The note now trembled in the mage’s hands, tears stinging her eyes at Auron’s words and she fought not to let them fall. She couldn’t take her eyes off the kiss at the end, and she noticed it looked a little shaky like he’d had to push himself to write it. After all this time, she finally knew that he felt the same and now she desperately needed to see him more than ever. Before she could do so, as she was an honest person and could never be unfaithful, she had no choice but to speak to Wakka first to do what she originally planned not to do. She found him still with his friends, interrupting as he shared another blitzball story, and he could immediately tell it was an important conversation they needed to have.
“Wakka?” The way that Lulu had said his name told him that the two of them needed to be alone, and he muttered something to his friends that caused them to leave the room. “Wakka,” Lulu sighed, “We need to talk.”
“I figured,” Wakka replied, trying to remain upbeat though he knew it was serious, “Seems to be somethin’ important, ya?”
“I didn’t want to tell you this,” she dreaded. She hesitated. “I wasn’t going to do this now.”
“Do what?” Wakka asked, becoming confused and the brightness leaving his voice. She hesitated again. “Lu, what’s up?”
“It’s us,” Lulu plucked up the courage to say, “We’re not right for each other.” Wakka was visibly saddened - yet not as shocked as she expected him to be.
“Yeah,” he sighed, “Yeah, I know.” Lulu was the one to be surprised then, somewhat taken aback by his words. “I saw this comin’,” he confessed, “We’re always fightin’ over stupid things.”
“Like brother and sister,” Lulu agreed thoughtfully.
“We did grow up together,” Wakka contemplated.
“I do love you, Wakka,” Lulu told him sincerely, “Just… just not like that.”
“Explains why never had…” His voice trailed as he became bashful. “Er… Well… ya know. Makes sense now, ya?”
“I’m sorry,” Lulu exhaled with a fallen gaze.
“Don’t be,” Wakka’s voice began to brighten again, “You gotta follow your heart. Better than lyin’ to me pretendin’ to love me.” As Wakka gave her a smile, Lulu began to be able to mirror it back to him before she realised that she had to see Auron as soon as she could and her smile left again. She knew that time was against them.
“I have to go.” She turned away and headed towards the door.
“Lu?” The sound of her name made her turn to face him again. “I’ve seen how you look at him,” Wakka revealed, without even needing to mention a name for her to know who he meant, “He looks at you like that, too.” Lulu started to glow at the thought of him. “Go and be happy,” he said to her affectionately, “You deserve it, ya?”
“Thanks, Wakka,” she responded with a fond little smile, before she left him behind her and began to head across the airship to find Auron.
As she searched for him frantically to no avail, she got off the airship as she wondered if perhaps he was outside somewhere. Her crimson eyes scanned around, hoping to find him, and she spotted him sat at the bottom of a staircase which had a sphere beside it. She charged over to where Auron was sat, seeming to be in his usual deep thought as he bowed his head and gazed at the ground while not noticing her swift approach. He did eventually hear footsteps, and he lifted his head.
“When were you going to tell me you had feelings for me?” Lulu questioned fervently. Auron noticed the letter in her hand.
“I believe I just did,” he replied nonchalantly, trying to remain unfazed.
“Do not be smart with me,” Lulu’s voice shook a little. “I mean it, why didn’t you tell me before?”
“There was no reason to,” he answered calmly as he stood.
“No reason?” Lulu echoed with exasperation, “Are you serious?”
“I had nothing to gain,” Auron explained for her. “You would never reciprocate.”
“So why tell me now, then?” she asked frustratedly, “Why? Why tell me at all?”
“You read the answer to that,” Auron stated. Lulu let out a sigh, and she shook her head sadly with her eyes down.
“You should have told me before...” she muttered wistfully, and then her eyes slowly lifted up to him as she braced herself to confess. “I do feel the same.” Auron was taken aback by her admission, as he never expected her to say those words though he had dreamt she would, and he began to take his shades away from his eyes. He never revealed them, apart from to those he felt closest to, which told Lulu how special she was to him. His eyes were transfixed on her as his shades went in his pocket, and Lulu was hypnotised by the new sight of his brown eyes that gazed at her with such affection. His eyes were gentle on her, and she had never seen such a side to him until now which just made her fall deeper for him.
“You... you do feel it?” Auron became a little nervous, still amazed by her confession.
“Yes,” Lulu replied softly, getting a little nearer to him. “I wish I’d known before...”
“And now there is no time,” he contemplated, the sound of his voice revealing a heavy heart.
“There is time,” Lulu hoped. “There’s now.”
“No,” Auron disagreed, but with gentleness, “Not enough. We can barely begin. There’s no future.”
“There doesn’t need to be,” she implored as she neared him, her hands almost touching his, “Now is enough.”
“It will only leave you with more to miss,” Auron told her with his voice softening, using every fibre of him not to pull her close to him and hold her. Lulu didn’t have that strength in her, and her hands began to brush against his. Their hearts both fluttered, seeming to skip a beat at each other’s touch, and the two of them gently held hands for the first time.
“I want more to miss,” Lulu fought tears. “It wouldn’t be so bad if you had told me before and we’d had more of this...”
“I know,” Auron sighed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she questioned as she wrenched her hands away, and tears began to escape as she hit his chest, “Why, why, why?” she cried as her hands quickly grew feeble, and she fell against his body. Auron’s heart thumped at the feeling of her so close to him, something he had longed for, and he tentatively began to wrap his arms around her. Auron was usually not a hugger unless it was someone very close to him; he used to love hugging his mother, although he never admitted to that once he was out of childhood. He thought about that, realising just how close to Lulu he already felt, and his arms started to settle around her. Lulu’s arms slowly went around him too, and she quickly quietened as she felt so at ease in his gentle embrace. It was as though the Calm had already begun by the peace that filled her and Auron as they shared in their comfortable silence, wishing to spend forever in each other’s arms but knowing their time was limited.
“I’m sorry,” Auron spoke to her softly.
“Just say you won’t go,” she implored as she held him tighter. “Stay... Please...”
“And this is why I didn’t want to tell you,” he replied with sadness, “You know I can’t stay.”
“Please...” she whispered, more tears rolling down her cheeks as she clung to him. He placed his hand gently to her cheek and she lifted her head, her eyes deeply looking into his, and he brushed the fresh tears away from her face.
“If only I could stay,” he yearned while cupping her cheek, and he slowly placed a tender kiss to her forehead. Their eyes met, transfixed again and momentarily paralysed by their feelings, before the two of them both inched nervously towards each other. Their hearts went crazy as they felt so excited yet shy, and they got closer little by little. A slight hesitation. A little closer. Almost touching. Hesitation. Then, their timid lips met for the first time. They parted, and touched again gently. Now the shyness began to dwindle, and they pressed their lips together in a more sure but still tender kiss. After a few moments, breathless with excitement at what had just happened, they broke away and softly locked their eyes on each other again. For the first time, Auron began to let himself smile at her and she couldn’t help but do the same gently back before they ended up in one another’s arms. They knew they would soon have to return to reality, to join the others and face the fact that they would soon part, but for the time being they made the most of their beautiful dream. Nothing else mattered for those moments, like they were only two people in all of Spira, tranquil in each other’s embrace and feeling safe despite the battle that was yet to be won. Auron thought about the fact that he would have to leave her soon, that he would never embrace her again once Sin was gone, and he held her a little closer to him. Although he was nervous as he had not done it before, he gently placed his hand to her head and stroked her hair which quickly started to soothe her. If she had been lying down his arms, she was sure that she would have fallen asleep and her breathing deepened. Time seemed to cease existing and Lulu lost herself in the dream, almost as though he wouldn’t leave if she could just fool herself that Sin was gone. The sound of Auron softly saying her name brought her out of it.
“Hm?” she slightly alerted, remaining tranquil.
“They will be wondering where we are,” he said, “We should go back.”
“Five minutes,” she requested. “Please.”
“Alright,” he agreed fondly, and he took her hand to lead her to the staircase he had been on before. He sat with her, and she nestled her head into his shoulder as they held each other. She already felt at peace with him, but she was soothed further when he resumed running his fingertips gently across her head. The soft and repetitive motion lulled her like a lullaby, and her eyelids shut as they felt rather heavy. Her breathing was slow as she felt completely at home in his arms, and Auron had never experienced such peace like he had with her close to him. His mind usually raced with all that was to come and everything he’d been through, going over what he believed were his failings and harbouring feelings of self-loathing for them, but the storm was quiet as he embraced Lulu. With Sin still rampaging, it was a momentary Calm of sorts - the closest Auron would ever experience as he would have to leave for the Farplane once Sin had been vanquished. He was savouring every second he had with her, until he noticed her head starting to droop as she began to fall asleep. He gently said her name to stop her, her tired eyes opening again, and he told her that it was time to go. She slowly sat herself up, her eyes finding his, and they shared one last, long kiss before they had to head back and leave their dream behind. As they began to stand, she clasped his hand and he held hers while they ambled towards the airship. They were in no hurry, as they didn’t want the magical moment to end and wished they could live a different life to be together. If only time had been on their side. As they were about to board, Auron let go of her hand and he hesitated to follow as she stepped on.
“You coming with me?” she asked.
“In a moment,” he replied, “You go on ahead.” She wavered a moment, unsure whether to leave him, but she continued onto the airship with a sigh. She had to look back at him, longing to run back to him and throw her arms around him, before she disappeared out of sight. Now that she was gone, he let his eyes begin to sting with tears at the future he could only long to have with her. He scarcely cried, and even then it was when he was alone like in this moment and only over things that mattered most to him. A single tear rolled down his cheek, and he could have broken down further if he had let himself as he was heartbroken that he would have to leave her behind - even more so after her confession - but he fought back his emotions and wiped the tear from his face. He painted his stoic mask back on, putting his walls back up as he took out his shades, and he slid them back on over his eyes. The guardian took a breath, making sure he was fully composed and his emotions were guarded, before he stepped onto the airship and had to begin pretending that nothing had ever happened. He never would forget, though, nor would Lulu; all they thought about was each other, longing for a life that they could share together and aching for that impossible but beautiful future.
