I was tagged by ormondhsacker!
I got tagged by ormondhsacker. I never do these things, but I have a weak spot for ormondhsacker, so, there you go.
Rules (why are there always rules?)
Rule one: Always post the rules
Rule two: Answer the questions the person who tagged you asked and write 11 new ones
Rule three: Tag 11 people and link them to the post
Rule four: Actually tell them you tagged them
And now for ormondhsacker’s questions:
1) What’s the one piece of technology you would have the hardest to live without?
I’ve gotten awfully attached to my e-reader in the last few years, and it would pain me greatly to let it go. My computer and I are pretty tight, as well. But if it came right down to it, I would have to say my smartphone. My parents live 1400 miles away, as do most of my family, and my friends are scattered far and wide. My phone allows me to keep in touch, kill far too much time on tumblr use the net, navigate using GPS, and a million other little handy things I can’t think of at the moment.
Of course, that’s assuming that you are only talking about electronic technology, not the more basic (wonderful!) stuff like indoor plumbing, air conditioning, medical care, automobiles, gas stoves, etc. My answer might change if you meant any technology whatsoever!
2) What is your favourite book?
Oooh. That’s a tough one…I can’t do it. If you break it down to favorite book in several genres? I’d say:
Classic fiction: To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Mystery: The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Popular mainstream fiction: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Science fiction: City of Pearl by Karen Traviss
Fantasy: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
Speculative fiction: Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus by Orson Scott Card (despite my deep, grave misgivings about this author’s political/social attitudes, this book is truly extraordinary.)
Romance (M/M, the only type of romance I read): Into Deep Waters by Kaje Harper (what a beautiful love story!)
Nonfiction essays: It Was On Fire When I Lay Down On It by Robert Fulghum
3) Who is your favourite fictional character? (This one doesn’t have to be from a book.)
Sherlock Holmes (closely followed by his constant companion, Dr. Watson), of course!
4) If you could go any place, fictional or real, where would you go?
Hmmmm…perhaps Pern, to sweet-talk a dragonrider into giving me a lift to the Southern Continent for some sun, sand and…? (What happens on Pern stays on Pern.) :)
5) What’s your favourite fanfic?
Nope. Can’t do it. How could I narrow it down? I’m a huge Johnlock fan, and there is such incredible writing talent in this fandom. There are the usual suspects that everyone names when they get this question, like Performance in a Leading Role by MadLori, Two Two One Bravo Baker by abundantlyqueer, Nature and Nurture by earlgreytea68, Electric Pink Hand Grenade by BeautifulFiction, Pull the Stars From the Sky by roane, The Heart in the Whole by verityburns, Through The Clouds by mazarin221b. However, there are some others that never seemed to hit that big top ten list, which I don’t understand, because I think they are brilliant. Here are just a few of them:
There But For the Grace of John Watson by skyefullofstars (skyfullofstars)
Trying to Find the In Between by NoStraightLine
Equilibrium by augustbird
This Man's Heart by ellie_hell
The Fabric of Life by holyfant
Northwest Passage by Kryptaria
And my most recent favorite,
Checkpoint Charlie (WIP!) by snogandagrope
...and so many, many more that I couldn't remember just now, but will kick myself for leaving out later.
6) What or who did you want to be when you were a kid?
I wanted to be a veterinarian or a doctor. I’m finally in nursing school, after an entire career in graphic design that I never intended to pursue!
7) What was your favorite toy as a child?
I had a huge collection of plastic horses (Breyer probably made most of them). Oh, the adventures my little horses had! In my herd, the mares ran the show, and the stallions knew to toe the line. Clearly, I was a budding young feminist.
I still have the whole collection (about 50 horses) in a box in my crawlspace. They’re probably worth some money now, if they’re not too roughed up by my childhood antics. Sometimes I’m still tempted to pull them out and play…
8) What’s the most subversive thing you’ve ever done?
Subversive? Let’s see. Probably writing explicit Sherlock slash fanfiction and publishing it online. I’m really pretty tame, overall.
9) Do you, or would you, read fem!slash?
I have read it, but it doesn’t really push my buttons like M/M slash does – which is probably odd, since I’m bisexual. (It feels weird to me that the idea of two men together turns me on, when that's an equation I would obviously be excluded from, but reading about two women together does nothing for me in fiction, while in real life, that's a different story.) There is something about the idea of two men getting it on that just appeals to me on a very visceral level. One can't always explain one's kinks, you know...
10) Do you play any musical instrument?
I have taken piano, guitar, and voice lessons in the past. Sadly, the only instrument that I still “play” is my larynx. :-/
11) Do you have a headcanon you’d like to share?
Sure. It’s Johnlock, of course. (Who could have seen that coming?)
In my mind, Sherlock’s love of fine, tailored clothes and super-soft pajamas are both related to a sensory issue. Sherlock is hypersensitive to rough textures against his skin, and discovered that it is lessened by wearing well-tailored clothing made of high-quality, smooth fabrics without any tags to irritate and scratch his skin. John understands, and when they have nights in where they snuggle on the sofa, John takes care to wear his softest vests and pajamas, so that his “snugglebee” (thanks for that, earlgreytea68!) can be comfortable.
Okay, so make my own questions and tag people - I must admit that I recently bought The Book of Questions by Dr. Gregory Stock, and so that’s the headspace these are coming from:
If you could know one thing about your future, what would you want to know and why?
Everyone has a few activities that they use to recharge their spiritual/emotional batteries. How do you recharge?
If you knew that the world would end tomorrow, and there was nothing that could be done to stop it, how would you spend your last day?
If you given a chance to take a single trip in a time machine, when/where would you choose to go? Why?
How did you meet your best friend? Did you know right away that your relationship would be something special, or did she/he just gradually grow on you?
6. If you could spend a week in the body of someone else, what body would you choose and why? (This doesn’t have to be a specific individual, e.g. “Venus Williams” or “Benedict Cumberbatch”; it could be simply an answer like “the body of a paraplegic man” or “the body of a newborn baby.”)
Technology: are you the sort of person who hangs onto the same old device/operatingsystem/program until it is broken/too antiquated to use anymore, or do you rush out for the shiny new toys as soon as they are available?
If you could be amazingly talented at one thing, what would it be and why?
Is there one story from your childhood that truly defines the person that you are? If so, care to share it here?
What is the most outrageous thing you’ve ever done? Would you do it again, if you had the chance to relive that situation?
What is your favorite thing about yourself? (I know this is hard. You’re not bragging, you’re honestly answering a question. You’re fabulous – go with it!)
And I tag: earlgreytea68, skyefullofstars, roane72, esterbrook, aurora-boreali, hedwig-dordt, ladyprydian, snogandagrope, azriona, mapleleafcameo and ladygreytea76. Please don’t be annoyed at me, dears - I look forward to seeing your answers, if any of you want to participate!
