Chuck Hansen is my favorite character to write in the Pacific Rim universe. There's an ocean of regret, hormones, hatred, loyalty and arrogance festering within that man-child. Every bitter oath and sarcastic smirk makes me grin.

Unapologetic Chuck Hansen Drabble #2

Ever had everything you ever cared about fucking shat on? That’s what the government did to me, to the Jaeger program.

I never suited up faster. We were almost packed up, nearly decommissioned and on our way to Hong Kong when that magnificent bastard broke through the Wall.

Maybe, I hoped, maybe they would see just how fucking stupid that Wall was and refund the program. 

All we had to do was beat that Mutavore bitch to a pulp in front of an audience of billions. Put on a good show and save the world. No problem. I could do this in my sleep.

“Guess they fucking need us now, old man.” I told my dad. He told me to watch my mouth and get my ass in Striker, like I really needed telling. 

Took that Kaiju down faster than anyone ever had. 

I was so pissed off, but the old man was too. Just about the only time we see eye to eye is bashing a monster to death. It feels good. It feels better than anything. 

I’m usually so pumped up after a battle that all I want to do is scream and yell, drink and fuck someone silly until the adrenaline wears off. But I gotta keep it together for the cameras. They always want to talk to me instead of Dad. Good thing I’m pretty. 

Afterwards, I wanted to tell all those cameras and all the people watching that this was all their fault. They didn’t have any faith in us. They built a fucking Wall, and look where that got them. 

Chuck Hansen wasn’t going to be around to save their asses anymore.

But the old man grabbed my arm and told me not to say anything that could fuck over Stacker, so I decided to have a little fun instead. 

“Look, they decommissioned the Jaeger program because of mediocre pilots. It's that simple. That's Striker Eureka's tenth kill to date. It's a new record.” And I meant it. The Jaegers are perfect weapons, the pilots are the problem. Too slow and too stupid to defeat these beasts. 

Fucking humans, with all their fucking flaws. 

“Are you still going to Hong Kong, even at a time like this?” The reporter asked me.

“Well, orders are orders. What else am I supposed to do?” 

I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I just don’t know.

But I’m not going to lay down and die. Fuck that.

I’m still the best and I’ll make everyone say it. I’ll make everyone believe it.

Unapologetic Chuck Hansen Drabble

I hear what they call me out there in the Shatterdome. The names aren’t pretty. Usually some version of what a fucking asshole. 

And I really don’t care. 

Because what usually follows those curses is “But he’s a damn good Jaeger pilot.” And that’s all that matters. 

I don’t have to be your best buddy, hell I don’t even have to be polite company. All I have to do is strap into that giant machine, hook my brain up with my damn dad of all people and fight. And win. 

That’s it. That’s the simple truth. 

I do my job and I do it well. 

Sure, I like to gloat a bit. A little. 

Who wouldn’t with all those cameras and the whole Earth watching you? They might as well know my face if I’m fighting to save them.

The whole fucking human race is depending on if we can kill those Kaiju. Just me and my dad who can’t look at me without making that wrinkly face of concern and regret. Fuck off Dad. I’ve seen him give me that look fifty times a day. Like a constipated turtle. 

Mom, well I’m not going to talk about Mom. She’s dead. She can’t do anything. Don’t talk to me about Heaven or shit like that because a good God wouldn’t let the Kaiju exist.

All I have to do is keep fighting and winning. Maybe I’ll get good enough to take the right side of Striker, really show everyone what I’m made of.

They’re bringing all the survivors to Hong Kong. They cut our funding. Guess I wasn’t good enough for the human race. Fuck them. 

I’ll fight for myself. Because I never let myself down.

Every time you screencap or gif Chuck Hansen walking down the hall in his drivesuit but crop out Stacker Pentecost next to him, except you can't get rid of all of him because they were walking so close that their arms touched, an angel says, "Yeah but nah, mate."

I like how OTT Chuck stans are the only fannish people I ever see complaining about Pacific Rim's writing or saying it's really poorly written/poorly told/doesn't make sense/etc.

Sorry not sorry Del Toro and Beacham and Kazinsky all did such a hamfisted, inept job of filming a movie about woobie unsung hero Chuck who just needs some understaaaaaanding~
