StripedSocks.com Presents: How to Take Spectacular Sock Selfies: Advanced Version

Spectacular socks are a rite of passage that are always worth celebrating. Like every magical moment, I’m sure you’ll want to snap the perfect photo of those, right? In Part 1, we shared beginner’s tips to help take flawless sock selfies. This time, we’re taking it up a notch with Part 2 – the advanced version, featuring Leopard print ankle socks from Forever 21 paired with black Authentic Skate Shoes from Vans. Keep reading to see what you can do to take spectacular sock selfies – it’s definitely a fun skill worth mastering.

What you’ll need:

One pair of spectacular socks – for ideas, click here to see which socks we have available

One pair of sneakers, or accompanying footwear

Digital camera, or smartphone – we used a combination of the Nikon D3300 and the iPhone 6

Camera tripod, or smartphone tripod – we used a combination of the camera tripod and the Panoramic Pic Pod Mount from Urban Outfitters (currently sold out)

      SIDE BY SIDE

As you can see, the best sock selfies are captured from a side angle, instead of head-on. That is because sock styles and shoe styles make the best photo magic when they agree with one another. A popular novelty sock and stocking trend that has been on the rise this year generally covers socks with repetitive patterns, or splashes the sides with eye-catching patterns. Coincidentally, the a majority of the most well-known sneaker brands also utilize the side space for designs or logos – Nike, Adidas, Puma, Reebox and Converse are just some of several.

Spectacular Sock Tips:

Pair wild patterns with calm, solid colors – socks stand out

Make sure both feet are in focus – more realistic results

Keep at least 0.5 ft. of space between both feet – better view

STAY GROUNDED

Low angle shots capture socks from a ground-level view that brings out all of their best features. These leopard print socks tease with an ankle-cut style and solid black trim, so we wanted to play with that concept using shots that showed them in normal, everyday positions. For the best results, a smaller, shorter tripod – like the Panoramic Pod Tripod for Smartphones, was used. Low angle photography offers a more personal view of the sock and shoes, something a longer tripod is far too tall to achieve.

Spectacular Sock Tips:

Keep one foot on the ground – gives the illusion of walking, or being in motion

Go near and far – close range accentuates details, far range shrinks and sharpens

Experiment with different styles and poses – laid back, preppy, casual, etc.
