I hate the internet so much why tf can’t autistic people even mention meeting the BASIC DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR AUTISM without being flooded with replies like:
“everything is an excuse”
“that has nothing to do with autism”
“you people can’t do anything
“actually you’re just a horrible person/a failure for not knowing how to do this”
“Yeah but you can learn to stop being that way and you should”
And no it’s not just abled/neurotypical people saying crappy things. There’s always some LSN autistic person coming in to be like “Erm actually I’m autistic and I don’t do this/I mask well enough to not do that so therefore that’s how autism must work for everyone.”
The latest thread that inspired this post included someone proclaiming that “actually all autistic people are super socially self-aware and we always make sure to remember social rules so if you’re forgetting to follow them it’s actually because you have ADD, not autism.” I’m not kidding. I’m paraphrasing from memory but I can go get a screenshot if it comes to it. I’m so tired.
Why do I need to remind fellow autistic people that it’s a SPECTRUM. That’s why it’s called autism SPECTRUM disorder. Why are you claiming to have a disorder if you seem to not even know the fucking acronym for it. Like I’m against fakeclaiming and I’m super pro self-dx btw, but holy fuck at least do some basic research on it first before going online and telling other autistic people how their autism is supposed to work.
Like afaik I fall under LSN autism, but these people make me question wether I actually have higher support needs. I mean I have legit reasons in my personal life to question my support needs (I wanna get more into that but it feels like a side tangent) but I don’t feel like I can trust my perspective after seeing so many people warp the meaning of autism into basically not being an actual disability anymore. Cuz I know that’s been an issue with a lot of LSN autistic people lately (thinking they have higher support needs just cuz having any support needs at all is treated as “extreme.”)
