Summary: A few months after the Agency is established, Dirk begins to notice that Todd has a peculiar habit of looking ... off around waiters. Perhaps not just 'off.' Perhaps 'stormy,' or 'tense,' or 'outright pissed' is a better way to put it - either way, Dirk isn't entirely sure how to interpret it. He's even more unsure how to interpret the fact that it doesn't happen around all waiters. It doesn't even happen around particularly rude ones. Just the ones who are overtly friendly towards Dirk.

Dirk tries not to get ahead of himself, because obviously, reading detailed social nuance has always been a bit of an uphill climb, so he's almost certainly misinterpreting things. And wishful thinking can get a person into a lot of trouble.

Unfortunately, so can second-guessing, reckless denial, and poor decision-making.

This got stupidly long, but here it is! I started writing this in early 2019 I’m pretty, sure, probably during CUB, it’s just been on and off since then.

Autistic Dirk Part 2:

Relies more on outright verbal confirmation than he does on nonverbal hints - he 100% does not understand why Todd has come back for him at the end.

Again - difficulty reading silent hints/body language, especially concerning emotion.

Sensory difficulties. Okay, and this is kind of a shot in the dark - but underwear choice. Lots of autistic people I know wear vests made of nice fabric under their normal clothes so that they can wear clothes that look nice but are sensory hell without the fabric of those clothes being in direct contact with their skin.

More sensory things - squishy things are the best... even if that squishy thing is a squishy sad friend.

weirdly specific dghda headcanons:

todd and farah enjoy playing video games together and actually find it to be a great way to bond and get closer. they’re both especially fond of the game ‘A Way Out’. dirk isnt really too keen on the types of games they play, but every so often all three of them will attempt ‘Overcooked 2’ (“DIRK!!! THE BURGERS ARE ON FIRE!!!”)

tina and farah like travelling and going on road trips as dates because it combines activities that they both enjoy.

the rowdies cut each others hair. this leads to a lot more freedom on style choice and has led to some very awesome hairstyles

the agency has a whiteboard tracking the amount of weeks spent where someone hasnt needed to go to the hospital. if it reaches a certain number they get to go out for drinks to celebrate. farah introduced the idea to discourage people (dirk) from being too reckless.

dirk is scared of elevators

todd does mini concerts for his friends

shopping trips become a weekly event for the agency. sometimes its to stock up on groceries, and sometimes its because dirk has the sudden urge to buy mop slippers at 11pm (“i really cant explain it todd. must be a hunch from the universe.”)

dirk finds deep pressure calming and todd and farah have become good at recognising his signs of being overwhelmed, so are always ready to give him an extra strong hug if needed.
