I'm an artist who loves Tolkien's world but hates the racism and one of the issues I ponder is how to draw orcs without being racist. The Prof unfortunately never gave a thorough description of them beyond that racist af letter. I don't expect you to have all the answers of course but I'd be interested to know your thoughts on this.

I think one way of doing this would be to remove all features typically coded as black. So remove the dark skin and the braids, and I think you’re fine! When most people draw orcs, they typically exaggerate their features as a means to make them look black (sometimes this is unintentional), and as a result it comes out looking like a racist caricature. Jackson made this worse by his depiction of Orcs in The Hobbit, while also casting actors of color to portray them. 

So if you can avoid making them look like stereotypical orcs, I think you’ll be good :)
