'The rearing of Autolycus'
Much has been said of king Odysseus of Ithaca and his sister princess Ctimene, thanks in no small part to Homer. It is well known that the royals descended from Hermes and grew up calling the golden Athenide 'grandmother' just as they called the Luck-Bringer 'grandfather', however their grandfather Autolycus who is the source of this link is far less explored due to the fact this demigod sought no military glory and challenged no laws openly. He conquered no lands, claimed no war prizes and named his daughter Anticlea in hopes she would have a happy life free of the struggles tied to the lives of heroes. His 'crown' would be in thievery, achieved without shedding blood. Some called his moniker 'Prince of Thieves' an affront to his adoptive mother. But this argument falls apart due to his larceny serving a Greek 'Robin Hood' purpose: Autolycus robbed from kings overtaxing their subjects and distributed cattle and other stolen goods to Khrysopteros's kits, widows and orphans. 'Never were the lame and bereaved so well as when Autolycus lived' they say to this day.
Autolycus was the son of Chione, daughter of Daedalion who was versed in magic. Though her interest was purely recreational. Among her talents was the unique ability to shape shift her face into whomever she pleased. Her thirst for knowledge and wit caught the eyes of both Hermes and Apollo. Which led to her being the only woman to share a bed with both gods in the same night as she stated there'd be no need to choose a lover between them, provided they knew how to have fun. It is said in their night of passion that Chione's face shifted into Perse when Apollo's lips were upon her skin and Arsinoe's when Hermes touched her. From this brief affair Chione bore twin demigods: From Apollo she bore Philammon who established the tradition of the hymns celebrating the births of Artemis and Apollo, written by himself (as well as the hymn for Ophelia), being performed by choruses of girls at Delphi. From Hermes she bore Autolycus.
Unfortunately, Chione fell to the sin of hubris as she proclaimed herself greater than Leto or Artemis after successfully delivering her own twins with divine blood. As a result, Artemis struck her down for the offense and the twins were given to the Athenides. Perse kept Philammon and Arsinoe kept Autolycus (one of the few times she reared a demigod rather than handing them over to Loyalty). The son of Hermes loved his adoptive mother and aunt deeply. He let his displeasure at her and his aunt Perseleia's yearly departure to Atlantis be known from an early age, to the point he stole Poseidon's trident in an attempt to bargain for the Athenides to not leave the surface. Thankfully Poseidon was more amused than angry. Laughing, the sea king told the boy "You share my tastes, lad. I too, would gladly keep my princesses with me and do all I can for this endeavor". Others would not be so forgiving as proven by the actions of Sisyphus and Heracles.
Here the artist depicts Lady Logikos in the early childhood days of Autolycus. Arsinoe is clothed in fine silk, grown from the mulberry fields of her main temple and tinted cream with Loyalty's dandelions. Her loom is filled with sheep wool held together by string colored violet in nod to her regal status. A clay basin sits on the corner of the column, signaling clean water to bless the child. Pink oleander grows at the right side of their little shelter, the beautiful yet poisonous flowers a keen reminder that Arsinoe's gentle hand does not equal weakness. Autolycus is doubly represented as the artist shows his past and future forms. As an old man he whittles, the great illusionist at work yet again as he changes the color or shape of an object to avoid detection amidst his adventures. As an infant he lays awake in his cradle, the basket weaving a tribute to the golden Athenide's craftsmanship. Both versions gaze upon Arsinoe: the child in anticipation and the old man in fondness. At the foot of the young demigod is the god Pan who has used the mist to take the form of a child (his preffered disguise when collecting children left to die in the wild) and entertain his newest sibling. The nature god causes vineyards to grow in celebration of the newest addition to their family, hands in movement to teach his brother a dance for when he's old enough to walk.
