#wip of Doorway Diva. This is the last piece in my collection of 6 new automata called Whimsical Windows! Come see them in action this Friday June 1, 8-11pm at the La Luz De Jesus Gallery (@laluzdejesus). The piece actually has a lot going on so this is just a small part. I sawed the jaws off of mink skulls. I gilded the fangs in 23k gold. I placed antique keys in their mouths (these are actually antiques not reproductions). In the next glass orb I wanted a small vertebrae spiral. Since the orb is so small I had to create this using the tiniest snake vertebrae I could find. I’m so in love these crazy hands I made! More #wip of Doorway Diva. I wanted the hands of this diva to be extremely elegant, so I took porcelain doll hands and added skunk claws (the diva has a skunk skull. I gilded the claws in gold. Then painted the Hands to match the bone color of the skull. I just love the way they turned out. This is the last piece in my collection of 6 new automata called Whimsical Windows! This was the sculpture I sat on a plane with (I bought a seat for it next to me) to personally deliver it to the buyer. It’s called Deep Sea Disco. And you guys are lucky because @josephrasch is willing to share with you the special treasures that have been hidden in the sculpture’s secret compartment since the day I made it! (See second video). I haven’t posted about my Butterfly Dream Machine in almost 2 years. It’s my greatest artistic achievement so I have to keep its memory alive! Here you go! I created the Butterfly Dream Machine in February 2016. I took twenty of the largest most beautiful butterflies from around the world and transformed them into individual articulated mechanical mini sculptures adorned with Victorian filigree and precious gemstones. Built into a giant fantasy machine these mechanical butterflies can be brought back to life with the use of a magical hand crank in a stunning spectacle lit with glowing quartz crystals and vintage vacuum tubes. A large antique brass butterfly on the top of the machine can be turned to activate an enchanted music box. The base of the machine has a mysterious locked wooden cabinet holding my sacred maker's journal with the secrets of this machine. The collector who purchased this piece was given the key. Here’s an old making of video for Butterflyport, the first automaton I made entirely on my own in 2012. The very first automaton I ever made as art was Watchbot City in 2011. I had the idea and created the sculpture but I didn’t believe in myself enough to do all the mechanical stuff on my own. So, this piece, was really a huge stepping stone. For those of you who don’t know, I started my art career making miniature robots out of watch parts that I called #watchbots. Watchbots are mechanical beings that gather their energy and technology from natural things. I imagined that their main transportation would be on butterflies. So I had a dream of a watchbot butterlyport and then recreated it in real life. I don’t make miniatures anymore because I always put way more details than anyone could ever notice. Seeing this video is so funny realizing how far I’ve come with my techniques, tools and even work bench. I do miss that mask though. I used it to keep my breath from blowing away the butterfly wings.
