Fi and Fe Revisited

Hey, thanks for the response! :) Actually, you can see Fi in the ENFP in this instance because the ENFP would feel hurt/sad if the INFP doesn't stop in to talk for awhile and also somewhat disregards the the wants/feelings of the INFP. This isn't Fe and doesn't help promote harmony, instead it is focused on the ENFP's own feelings and wants, which is natural for a primary/auxiliary Fi user to do. As a primary Fi user, I can see this quite clearly. The ENFP making the INFP come in to visit for awhile when the INFP didn't have that planned actually disrupts group harmony because the INFP feels rolled over and like her legitimate reasons for leaving right away (groceries in the car and on a tight time schedule) are ignored. Further, you can see INFJ trying to promote group harmony by telling the INFP how ENFP will react if INFP leaves right away. She also tries to tell ENFP that INFP has to leave right away and keeps an eye on the time throughout the visit for INFP and helps her get out the door after 15 minutes. This is clearly INFJ trying to promote group harmony and ENFP & INFP concerned with their own needs and wants and making decisions that are largely based on Fi.

As an end note, you have some curious theories but the auxiliary function is a core part of every personality. INTJs are thinkers (auxiliary Te) and I doubt any of them could be convinced that this is not a central facet of their personality. The auxiliary function doesn't mean we have an "introverted vs extroverted" fight going on within, as the "introvertedness" of any function besides the primary does not mean the person is introverted but merely means that the function is inward focused vs outward focused. The function stack is a complicated theory but is very rewarding and lends superb insights into a 3D personality. Where do INFJs get their concern for other's feelings and harmony if they have no Fe? Any type can cultivate Fe (I have done this myself because it's very important to me) but INFJs have it almost as naturally as breathing. INFJ in this instance wasn't thinking "must preserve group harmony" but simply acted in the way that she did because it is a inseparable part of her personality.

Me and Ne

I hope submitting this is not too presumptuous. I thought it might be in (kind of) the same vein as some of the My Life as… and other posts. Your post about inferior Ne got me thinking about my auxiliary Ne (INFP), so some thoughts, I guess.

I kind of have a love-hate relationship with my Ne. Ne is like a firework- it’s bright and explosive and colorful and it can be tons of fun, but it’s also loud and messy and sometimes just inappropriate to the context. One the one hand, I love the ride the Ne can be. At the same time, I know that I eventually have to get off and deal with things as they are, not at they might be. But a) that’s harder than it seems like it should be, and b) reality is just not nearly as much fun.

To illustrate: I have a huge problem with the rabbit trails thing. Sometimes I’ll be trying to focus on something, something that I need to get done, maybe even something interesting or enjoyable, and an unrelated thought will strike me. I can’t not follow it. I try to tell it to get lost, that I’m focusing, but it keeps beckoning me, until I give in and fall down the hole. I hit the ground and innocently pick up a key, and then a bottle, and the next thing I know, I’ve been staring at the same page of my textbook for 45 minutes (That’s only a slight exaggeration.) I’m almost a slave to ideas. Passing fancies pick me up and blow me to places I didn’t expect, which can be awesome, but then I have to walk back home.

I suppose, as an INFP, my Ne is probably different from an ENxP’s or an INTP’s in that my invading thoughts/ideas are usually related to my pool of interests- my current fandoms, one of my story projects, or something else close to my heart. I don’t know, obviously, but I imagine that an Ne dom might have a broader scope, and that an INTP, seeking a general understanding of the world, would also be inclined to wander off onto a greater variety of subjects. Hey look, my problem in action- this whole paragraph was a rabbit trail. I just feel like I have to (or just want to, maybe) cover everything, because what if I miss something important?

Lately I’m feeling like higher Ne might more of a problem than it’s worth. People talk about Ne being great because it’s creative, but it’s so…spastic. Maybe I just don’t know how to control it, but sometimes it feels like it would be more useful in a lower position, where it could still be utilized, but wouldn’t be in the way. Sometimes I do wish my Ne and Si were in opposite order, because sometimes I feel like I can’t function in life. I can’t even focus on a project long enough to finish it. By the time I get one little part done, I’ve got three other ideas bouncing around, vying for attention. I guess it’s probably just a personal problem. At times I suspect that I might be in something of an Fi-Si loop, so it’s likely that I’m not utilizing my Ne properly, and this is why I occasionally get so frustrated with it. My Fi and Ne want to change, but my Si says NOPE and I listen, because my Ne is too big. It scares me. (That kinds of turned into a therapy session there, sorry.)

I was being kind of negative there, but there are good parts to it. I’m never bored. I always find something to think about, to talk about, or to consider.  Constant distraction is probably what allows Ne to find connections between seemingly disparate things. It’s over at one idea’s booth, then jumps over to another, unrelated one, and since it was just at the other booth, it might see similarities that other functions couldn’t pick up on. (Why did I use booths for that analogy? That was weird. See, Ne does weird things like that.) I feel like Ne and Si work together kind of like doing a puzzle. Ne takes out the Si box of experiences and memories, dumps them out on the table, and starts putting pieces together and seeing what fits. I guess the higher the Ne, the more liberties it’s likely to take with how pieces connect, and/or what you can build out of them.

You can tell that I used Ne to write this, because it was going to have an actual point and then it got away from me. It ended up as just sort of a collection of thoughts about Ne that I’ve been having for a while, plus a few that I hadn’t considered until I started putting it on (electronic) paper. That’s another thing that my Ne does- I might have lots of nebulous bits of ideas floating in my head, but it’s not until I start talking or writing that they take complete shape and I can really figure out “Oh, this is how it works.” I guess that would be the case, it being an external function.

You know, I sat down intending to write about my inferior Te and this is what came out instead. Go figure. So yeah, one Ne aux’s Ne thoughts, for whatever they’re worth.
