I had the thought to put Rocky in a gachapon ball and it spiraled from there.

In The Woods Somewhere
Don’t you just love being haunted by the symbolic representation of the guy you sent to space against his will??
Oh Hozier you always come through for us fandom creatives
cant help but think about an au where grace is in contact with earth the entire time (when he's awake at least), so the video diaries are just plain video calls, and rocky is ratting that little nerd out in the background every chance be gets.
rocky: GRACE CALL ROCKY DUMB
grace: no, what i said was that you dont understand! not because of intelligence! you literally just dont have this on erid so i-
rocky: GRACE CALL ROCKY BIG DUMB IDIOT!!!! TELL GRACE NOT BE MEAN TO ROCKY!!
stratt: grace dont be mean to rocky
grace: why do you always take his side
stratt: the entire ship takes his side. you know that.
RAPID FIRE Ryland Grace is catnip for powerful people ideas GO!
World Leaders love him because he explains all the science stuff to them without making them feel stupid
Tom Ryder and Tony Stark have an on going rivalry of trying to woo the man, Ryland has no idea.
Grace stays on earth Au, Eva Stratt has to beat off government officials with a stick because they keep trying to steal her favorite scientist.
Ryland may have been kicked out of academia but he didn't have zero job offers. He received multiple high paying offers from places that would love to hire the smart crazy guy who thinks outside the box. Unfortunately he really wanted to teach, and now half his emails are requests for him to do consulting for companies during the summer.
Whenever tours of Stratt's Vat are hosted, they spend the most time in Grace's lab because he is horrible at talking to people and will just start doing a really simplified explanation on astrophage and what he's working on. This actually works out really well for Stratt because she no longer has to spend 6 hours explaining to idiots what they are working on and can just skip to getting more funding from them.
I haven’t seen this come up yet in any fanfictions or fanart, but my idea is that instead of ever going back to earth, the establish a dozen or so satellites to connect back to earth and it’s a slow communication it’s on the same level as sending letters. But they can reconnect with stratt :3
The idea of them sending messages back and forth makes me happy and there’s one instance where Grace is asking how private these messages are cause they’d love to share some things with stratt but they’d only be for her ears, like how he bagged 3 baddies statement.
All the talk about Bloodymary and Trolley Operators is making me really curious about a different swap. What would it be like if Ava appeared on the Hail Mary with Grace and Simon appeared on earth with Stratt? How would Stratt react to someone sacrificed in an alternate reality where they failed to save the stars? How would Simon handle being on a planet for the first time in his life? How would Ava feel about being the person on a one-way-mission? How would Grace react to suddenly having another scientist on board? What would their friendships be like?
Ryland Grace is the best example of how to properly execute a hero’s journey without literally making him the chosen one or already having it in him
He’s human, they let him be human full of doubts and uncertainty and even by the end those parts of him are still present. He doesn’t become an untouchable force, he becomes as being who learns to make the best of his situation and conflict and his reward is what he chooses to do next ON HIS OWN TERMS
It’s been confirmed he stay’s with Rocky. But I think it’s because that’s what he wants to do, he enjoys the new life he has found for himself. Staying connected to teaching and learning about these new friends he has made
If anyone is struggling to write a story with these themes, the movie is a good lesson to take things from
Stratt saying, "you'll be remembered as a hero" is so disgustingly tragic.
Ryland Grace was begging for his life and the most she could offer was that. No apologies, no condolences, no regrets.
Just empty words that didn't matter to a man that was being sent to his execution.
