“Hey, Mako. Get in here,” Saikhan called out from his office.

Mako turned his head sharply, but couldn’t actually see the Assistant Chief from his own desk. With a grunt, he stood and walked over to the AC’s open door.

“AC?”

Saikhan waved him inside. “You used to hang out at the pro-bending arena, right? You know the building pretty well. I’ve got a call here I want you to check out.” He ripped a page from his notepad and flourished it in his direction.

The note read: voices coming from arena, late night, no match

“Ah, AC… this isn’t much to go on,” Mako ventured. He flipped the page over, in case he was missing something.

Saikhan smirked. “The desk figures it’s just a drunk. Not sure if he meant making the noise or making the call. Take your brother and check it out. Radio back before you go home.”

Mako took the dismissal and closed the door behind himself. Five minutes later, he and Bolin were in the car, making their way across town.

“Voices at the arena, huh?” Bolin mused. “It sure didn’t seem like the spirits liked the place. And most of the ones that talk don’t really go around at night. Have they learned the rules? Are we going to have spirit teams? Can spirits bend elements?”

Mako could practically feel the steam pouring out of Bolin’s brain, and wasn’t surprised when his brother asked if they should collect Korra on the way over.

He did manage not to sigh too heavily, he thought. “It’s probably just some drunk who’s singing to himself. Or to the moon. Or to the water spirits.” Another turn, and they started down the driveway to the parking lot.

The arena, as always, was lit brightly enough to read by. From the far side of the parking lot. Mako stopped the car and killed the engine, rolling down a window to take in the cool air wafting off the water.

And sure enough, he heard the voices. It sounded like two of them, and it sounded like a conversation.

Bolin’s door opened, and he had to call out to the idiot to slow down and be patient - and careful - about the approach. They still had no idea what was going on.

With a dozen apologies and a handful of reassurances, the brothers split up to opposite edges of the parking lot, trying to stay outside the halos of the lights staggered across the field of asphalt.

The closer they got to the arena, it felt like the voices were getting faster. He still couldn’t make out individual words, but he was getting the impression of the speech patterns. They felt familiar somehow, which was confusing. The arena was shut down for a month following the pro-bending season, before some of the other events started being staged.

Paying attention to these unpredictable, unintelligible voices and also keeping an eye on Bolin was going to send him to bed just as soon as he could get them home.

He’d be calling back to the station from his apartment. There wasn’t a pay phone for blocks in any direction.

“OH!”

The word, clear as could be, jolted Mako back to his goal: figuring out what was going on with those noises.

Across the lot, Bolin had picked up the pace and was waving at him to hurry up.

Something about that exclamation made him want to run away, but he still couldn’t put his finger on it.

There was another voice, but it was lower, harder to distinguish. Again, the music of the voice felt familiar - just different.

The first voice replied, its tempo was even more intense than it had been before, still feeling so familiar…

“YES! That’s the stuff!”

Mako felt frozen in place. He thought he knew who that was…

“Isn’t that Shinobi’s voice?” Bolin asked with clear confusion. “Why would he be here if there are no matches going on?”

The rest of Mako’s blood froze in his veins as the voice continued, and it became unavoidably understandable in excruciating detail.

“What a fantastic display of virtuosity! The use of hands alone would be noteworthy, but that mouth! I’m currently straining my pants…”

He couldn’t help it. He clapped his hands over Bolin’s ears.

Except Bolin was much stronger, and shoved him aside.

Just in time to end both of their lives in mutual embarrassment when they heard:

“You really love the sound of your own voice, don’t you?”

It would be weeks before either of them could look Lin Beifong in the eye.

Summary: When an overworked Asami meets with the beautiful actress, Ginger, who claims to have invented a revolutionary radio technology, their unexpected collaboration sparks a frequency neither anticipated.

Written for Day 1 of @avatar-wtf-weekend for the prompt, “Impress Me”.

I challenged myself to only write sapphic ships for this event, so here’s my first submission! I found Ginsami to be a compelling ship because they’re both beautiful women, and I thought about how often society treats beautiful women—shallow, vain, only valued for their looks. So I wanted to explore that dynamic, and I’m really happy with how this turned out.

When all senses of normalcy and chances of prosperity have been consumed by darkness, lost to the void, one looks around in any and all directions for a glimmer of light. As time carries on, desperation manifests as a demon, digging its claws in its target. Higher and higher up the spine it moves, piercing the heart and lungs in its journey. There is a flicker of light, a warmth the victim is drawn to in order to stave off the hopelessness flooding their lungs…

They can only cling onto the possibility it is not an illusion.

Painfully crawling closer to the light, questions float to the forefront of their mind:

Is the risk worth it?

Who will they be when they come out the other side?

Would the soul looking back at them in the mirror be someone they could live with?

Yingsu did not have these answers, but she was certainly poised to find out. The Platinum Affair all but obliterated the economy of her family’s village to scraps in the depths of the Kolau Mountain Range. Her father’s business suffered a great deal as a result and was primed to go under. Resultant policies of the Platinum Affair kept them trapped, preventing them from finding success in moving outside of the region. Even more, her mother at home raising her siblings was expecting another little one soon. Call them stuck sitting in a pressure pot, ill prepared for the inevitable.

Work in the region was scare: suffering spared no one and conditions fell to ruin. A part of Yingsu entertained the idea of committing to the underground fighting arenas people have told stories of in low whispers.

She could fight.

She could win.

The money may not be a lot but something—anything— was more than nothing. Her brothers and sisters were all so small and if she could find a way to prostitute herself and her strength for them, she would do it.

Any belongings of value were stuffed in a small knapsack and a scrappy letter with the high level explanation set on her pillow.

Yingsu— at least the Yingsu to them— was no more.

For @avatar-wtf-weekend day 1, Recovery. Piandao/Jet

I normally like to think about a platonic relationship between Jet and Piandao, but there is also something very intriguing about, in a Jet lives AU, for their paths to cross some ten years later, and something to blossom between them. Maybe Jet joins the White Lotus, and gets hurt, and Piandao takes it upon himself to help Jet recover. Maybe he helps Jet heal more than just his physical wounds.

This was written for Day 1 of @avatar-wtf-weekend! I tried to incorporate all three prompts Noodles / "I never thought I'd do that / Recovery, but the fic mostly focuses on the last two.

Ship: Jargala Omo/Viper

Summary:

"The poison was meant for you personally.”

“That’s some good news, at least,” she said, her shoulders relaxing a bit. A failed hit was one thing, but having to dump millions of yuans worth of dust might have ended her for real.

OR

After a failed assassination attempt, Jargala wants to get back to triad business right away, and Viper wants her to lie down before she faints.
