What’s this? I published a novelette on Royal Road based off my original world Jargala! If you like ninja angst, possibly concerning amounts of blood and the trolley question I suggest reading Shadow Hunters: Shiroshi.
On the tidally locked planet of Jargala located in a zone known as The Great Valley, eight clans of native "shadow hunters" each with their

Fandom: Legend of Korra
Wordcount: 2,402
CW: Like nothing. This is hella tame. Idk. Police?
Author Note: Hello. Onyx here! So I saw the Hola Verano! Summer Anthology Collab created by @soleilnomoon and @queserasora and thought it would be a cool thing to to jump onto to finally force myself to write fanfiction. That being said, this is my first fanfic so don't be mean. (Or seriously you can tbh, I can take it). This is hella tame cause like, i'm just trying to get my bearings, as I haven't written in like 10 thousand years. Mako isnt even my favourite character like that....like he's not even in my top 5.... (lowkey just realized he almost doesn't even make it into my top 10 lmfao) BUT he's an adorable awkward turtle and I'm an awkward turtle and this idea popped into my brain cause I guess I was just curious how he'd spend a vacation with his friends. I honestly didn't know how to end this so just wrote until I decided I was done lol. Not beta read cause I don't know people like that. I don't know what else to say. Hope you enjoy! Feedback really is welcomed.
Mako never noticed how annoying the heat could be.
Summer was always his favourite season. He was a fire bender why wouldn’t it be? The stifling air only aided to the flames that leapt across his fists. Or at least that’s what made sense to him. Things always seemed just a slight bit easier during summer. But now it seemed like it all depended on the situation.
Just go to Ember Island with the crew, they said. Relax. Have fun. Absolutely no work- something Korra had repeatedly said staring right at him, as if he were the only workaholic in their group.
Logistically, it all made sense, a vacation on a beautiful tropical island, during his favourite season, with his best friends and brother. Only, the fun perhaps diminished when said best friends were dating, and your little brother brought his girlfriend along, and you were suddenly the fifth wheel.
The roof above the hotel had become his go to retreat to avoid them. Sure he was alone, but at least he wasn’t the odd one out.
“Are you going to pass out? You look awful.” The melodic voice rippled throughout the room, bouncing off the crystals that wrapped around his legs and wrists, yanking him down toward the ground, and pressing his cheek against warm stone. Heat radiated from his stomach, pushing words out of his mouth before he could stop them.
“Fuck off.”
Mako winced, regretting the words as soon as he said them. Jargala leaned in closer, pale eyes twinkling with something he couldn’t quite describe.
“Now officer, that wasn’t very nice was it?” The triad leader, reached out running her finger across his jaw. “You would think that someone who upheld law and order would be more civil than that.” Her hand had trailed down to his shoulder and with a single tap, the jennamite expanded up his arm. “Apologize.”
Mako took a deep breath, schooling his face as he chastised himself. He was better than this. He had already faced the worst earth bender in existence without skinning him a live. Sure Prince Wu was harmless, but he had to be infinitely worse than the leader of the Creeping Crystal Triad.
“You set me up.” He’s responded instead, ignoring her demand.
Jargala raised a brow and laughed. “I set you up? Sweetheart, you were the one who followed me.”
Mako resisted the urge to grind his teeth. He had spotted her half an hour before. His eyes had been flickering between the guests from his sanctuary above them, until they landed on her and warning bells went off. She wasn’t supposed to be here. She was up to something. Korra was in danger. “That’s because you’re a leader of one of the biggest triads in Republic City.”
She leaned back, observing him before making a large gestural swoop with her arms, showcasing the decked out hotel room that had to have cost way too much. “We aren’t in Republic City darling, and this isn’t the Dragon Flats. Just like you, I was in desperate need of a vacation.”
“From crime?”
“Evidently.” She replied drily.
Sweat gathered on his brow, as he did his best not to move. The last time he had tried to fire blast out of crystals they reformed before he could even bat an eye, thicker and tighter than they previously were.
“The Avatar doesn’t know you’re here does she?” His lips pressed together tightly, his eyes flickering from her face to her hands in wonder of what could she possibly do with them next. Jargala blinked, a sudden realization taking over her face. “Of course not. Let me guess - the Avatar doesn’t know I’m here.” She chuckled. “You thought you could be some sort of hero, protecting her from threats or something ridiculous like that.”
His lips were pressed so tightly they had become a single straight line as bright flickering specs crowded his vision. The sunset had yet to begin despite it being late into the evening. The sereneness of the island had allowed him to slip away without his friends noticing, and maybe that would now be his downfall.
“…You knew she’d be here. You’re up to something. ”
Jargala smiled. “I’m really not. But if you want me to be, I mean- you’re pretty cute, I can play bad for you.”
Heat rushed to Mako’s cheeks, turning his whole face red. “I don-you-”
She tilted her head to the side, allowing her dark black curls to obscure parts of her face. “You are here for my attention aren’t you?”
“That’s insane.”
“So is following a very powerful earthbender into her home and expecting her to be completely compliant isn’t?”
The fact that she even had a point was more irritating than the whole situation. “…I took a gamble that it would be safe. There aren’t that many things you can bend indoors without damaging a hotel.”
Jargala’s eyes widened. “You know that’s actually a solid idea.” It would have been, had he not have stupidly forgotten the woman’s choice object of bending. It had been an misstep to assume she wouldn’t cary the glowing green crystal on her person. She sat down beside him, leaning back on her hands like she was outside soaking in the sun. The sudden movement causing him to twitch, once again activating the jennamite allowing it to crawl up to his shoulder. Her knew she was there, right beside him, but she had become nothing but an unclear blur.
“You’re looking worse by the second.” She noted.
“You just said I was cute.”
“I meant in normal circumstances.”
He grit his teeth. If he was able to produce lighting it might have been enough but he couldn’t from this position. “Then let me go, and I won’t look as awful.”
She smiled. “What’s in it for me?”
“What? You-”
“You broke and entered into a place that is certainly not part of your jurisdiction because you are a police officer in a whole other nation. I could report your right now. Maybe let you see how it’s like in a cell for once. …I wonder if Beifong would demote you.”
He scoffed. “Being in a cell isn’t new to me.”
“Oh?”
As if he would answer that. His arms were starting to feel numb, the sweat that trickled down his face was burning his eyes. She wanted a deal. And it wasn’t like they hadn’t struck deal with her for her help when Asami had been kidnapped. “What do you want then? What would convince you to let me go?”
Her eyes twinkled. “If you aren’t here for my attention I want one simple thing, access.” His stomach dropped. “I want you to ensure that I have a much easier way to access our dear president.”
“You’re crazier than a sewer pipe elephant rat if you think I’d ever give you that. A tirad leader having access to a non-bender president? I would never let that happen.”
“That’s a shame. Especially considering the fact that your body does not seem to be reacting well with the jennamite at all.”
Mako had been hoping she hadn’t noticed. The pin pricks that had fluttered throughout his body when he had first been restrained now felt like more of a throbbing ache. He took a deep breath, letting fire build in his stomach, until it scratched at this throat to come out. With no warning, he exhaled, letting the fire blast out of his mouth. The flames licked the crystals, cracking them and freeing his arms. Jargala latched backwards, out of the reach of the fire and too surprised to react to his attack. Freeing his legs as he pushed off the ground, Mako stood up, chest heaving. Fire blades jutted out of his fists as his eyes met her blurry shape. “That’s enough.”
The gang leader stared at him, but made no move to attack once more. Satisfied, the fire blades flickered out, before he took one step and everything went black.
He could still taste the smokiness on his tongue, when he opened his mouth. Purple and oranges hues had begun to fill the room from the large windows all around them. Mako pushed himself up only to pause. He wasn’t on the ground. In fact he was on one of the softest surface he had ever experienced. The bed felt like a pillow engulfing his body.
“Great, you’re awake.”
His amber eyes flickered to the the only other pair in the room. Jargala sat in one of the grand chairs, her legs crossed as she casually tossed the paper she had been reading aside, and picked up a book.
“Seems like your body really didn’t care for the jennamite.” She flickered her head towards him and he looked down. His arms and shins were wrapped in thick bandages, carefully put together. His feet hadn’t quite gotten that luxury as the searing redness and slight bumps grabbed his attention. Mako frowned as she spoke once more. “I figured you would want to walk, so wrapping your feet seemed counter productive.”
Very little was making sense to him. “What-”
“You passed out the moment you tried to leave. It was almost funny in the sad kicked poodle puppy sort of way.”
He narrowed his eyes. “And you tried to heal me because…?”
“...Because I’m not a sadistic monster?”
Mako knew that not all triad members were necessarily bad. New few of the members that he had grown up around were bloodthirsty villains. Some just liked the thrill, others, like him and Bolin, had just wanted to get a warm meal in their bellies. But the leader of a triad? They had to be different. They couldn’t just operate out of mere thrill or hunger. Hesitating he lowered himself from the bed, ready to once again to bring out his fire blades, but she made no effort to move or to stop him. Taking a quick sweep he could see that all the jennamite that had taken hold of him was no where to be found.
“I’m not getting you an in with Zhu Li.”
Jargala waved her hand, turning the page in her book, before tossing it aside as well.“Obviously. I never expected you to.” Somewhere between his trip on the floor to the bed she had gathered her hair and lifted it to a high ponytail, and he wasn’t sure if that meant that she was getting comfortable and relaxing or if she was getting ready to attack.
“Then why would you ask?”
“Did you know that you’re a very reactive person? Your shocked face is utterly hilarious, and your displeased face is really in a league of its own.”
Mako frowned.
“Yes! Just like that!”
He hesitated, forcing the words out of his mouth that he didn’t want to admit. “I don’t understand.”
“I feel like that happens a lot.” His frowned deepened as she let out a loud belly laugh.
“This isn’t a joke.” Mako’s eyes flashed dangerously, but it did little to wipe the amusement off the woman’s face.
“Entertainment, sweetheart. This island is actually quite boring. But dealing with a self righteous officer who thinks he can pull one over on me? The leads to a very entertaining night.”
He scoffed. “I’m not self righteous.” His feet were already moving toward the door slowly so he could escape before she noticed.
“All you heroes are. Despite the fact that you break the laws as much as anyone else. You just get pardoned from it.” Jargala paused, picking up the paper that she had originally discarded. The fact that she wasn’t exactly wrong rubbed him the wrong way. “See you around Officer. Though, the next time you try to corner me, I promise, I won’t be as gentle.” The smile vanished from her face.
His eyes flickered to the door and back. “Is that a threat?”
“You tell me.”
She was going to give him a headache. “…Who else are you here with?”
“Why, you want to stalk them as well?” His lips pressed together, not taking the bait.
“I am here alone. My members are not my friends, I don’t need to be surrounded by them all the time. Is that answer acceptable pretty boy?”
His guard should have heightened and he should have easily been suspicious of her answer. But he wasn’t. Instead something else caught his attention.
“You know that I hang out with the Avatar. But you don’t seem toknow my name…do you?”
“Do you want me to know your name?”
“How would you have reported me if you don’t know my name?”
“For someone who’s supposed to be a detective your deductive skills are frightening.” She lifted her hands above her head, stretching as she interlocked her fingers before standing up.”I was never going to report you.” He allowed her words to sink in, taking in her simple way of being. It had all just been a game to her. Lightning Bolt Zolt would take things so unseriously.
“It’s Mako.”
“Hm?”
“My name.” He hesitated. “It’s Mako.”
She wiped the sweat off her brow. “Ah. Now I know who to actually report next time.” She smiled and stood up. “If it is alright with you Officer Mako the pretty boy, I’d like to get out of this room. You were passed out for far longer than I expected, and apparently the island breeze and the sunset are better outside - who would have thought?”
“They’re the best on the roof.” The words slipped out before he could stop them.
“Do you have access to the roof?”
“…Sort of.”
“Legally?” He didn’t responded and she laughed. “So are you going to continue to keep me entertained up there?”
He opened his mouth, and then closed it. It could have been a trap but if she had wanted him injured she wouldn’t have treated his wounds. He couldn’t deny that it could be beneficial. There was first the fact that if Jargala was with him, she couldn’t cause any trouble.
And most importantly it meant he could escape being a third wheel for a little longer. Mako cleared his throat. “As an apology, I will….but when we get back to Republic City…I don’t know you. Clear?”
Jargala reached out and wrapped a hand around his arm. “If that’s the lie that you want to tell yourself- crystal.”
What hcs do you have about jargala? Her background etc
Yay, a Jargala ask! Thanks, anon! Okay, here's what I've got:
Jargala was born in a small Earth Kingdom village a few hours outside of Ba Sing Se. She is the only daughter of Jai and Jamila Omo, but her mother is at the center of a web of extended family who live in the area, so Jargala grew up around a bunch of cousins who were almost like siblings to her.
Her paternal grandfather is a prominent member of a daofei group in the Lower Ring of Ba Sing Se. That side of her family has its roots deep in the world of daofei, but her father broke all ties with them decades ago. As a young adult Jai made up his mind to leave that world behind, move away from the city, and live an intentionally mundane life.
I often say that Jargala is eldest daughter coded because she is among the oldest (and by far the most spirited) of her cousins and had a hand in raising many of them.
Jargala loved her family and largely enjoyed her childhood, but as she got older she realized that her options in the village were limited. Her mother started asking her about betrothal arrangements and it gave her the absolute ick.
So, as a teenager she left home (without her mother's knowledge) to make her fortune in Ba Sing Se. Before she left, her dad begrudgingly gave her the name and address of his estranged father and told her that he would take care of her if she ran into any trouble.
Let's just say that trouble found her fast, and she ended up learning the ins and outs of the cactus dust trade from her grandfather. Eventually she ended up gathering her own crew and doing business in all three rings.
Years into her enterprise, the Dai Li crack down on her operation and she ends up having to flee to Republic City. Her grandfather writes her a letter of introduction to the leader of the Creeping Crystals, who he knew from decades prior, and the rest is history.
All the while, Jargala would send letters home to her family talking about her life as an economics student at Ba Sing Se University (which was true) and later an investment banker in Republic City (demonstrably false) so they wouldn't worry. And she sends money home every month.
okay the jargala posts all got me thinking about my headcanon that asami and jargala used to hook up during the 3 year time skip
so i read through turf wars again to see if there’s anything that could prove me wrong/imply that asami didn’t know jargala previously
arguably the ONLY thing that makes asami seem unfamiliar with jargala is this one line
but like i could just be like yeah asami just didn’t want to admit to korra that it was jargala, the triad leader she had a fling with, as opposed to “some woman named jargala”
