When he stood on that platform, he buried the last fragments of himself under layers of duty and sacrifice. He had watched Bucky as a stranger. As the man who didn’t love him. Because he knew that if he were himself at that moment, he would crumble, be unable to do what he needed to do. Which was to stay away from Bucky because Bucky deserved better. He deserved peace in his life, somebody who could give him the world, and not - what had the Captain done to him but brought him misery?

Bucky turned around, and there he was. Steve was in the middle of the platform, Natalia next to him. They both looked like they had been crying, and like it had been much longer than just a minute that it had been for Buck. Although to him, the minute lasted a decade.
“Steve,” He said, uncaring of how his voice broke. Because that was Steve, really, truly him. The mask was slipping, and Steve was letting it despite all the people around them.
Bucky wanted to reach out, rip it off, peel it till all he could see was blood, pain, death, and his Steve behind it. His Steve, the man he truly thought he lost, but there Steve was, ready to fight for them. Bucky marveled at the sight of him. His Steve.
Always his Steve.
