We're taught to celebrate the extraordinary. The promotions. The milestones. The once-in-a-lifetime moments. But what if we've been overlooking something just as valuable? I've been thinking about the quiet perfection of an average day—a cup of coffee, a meaningful conversation, finishing what you set out to do, helping someone else along the way. Maybe those average days aren't something to rush through. Maybe they're the very days that become a well-lived life. My latest Solo Pour reflection is now on the blog. Rambling life update:  my uni is 40,000 people but is such a small world in a bad way like living across the street from my ex and his new gf but also in a good way like running into my friends and sensei randomly all the time. I get to leave the country for a whole flippin year in a month and a half, God bless. In other news, I am trash for sappy Japanese and Chinese romantic dramas so I simultaneously think 30 yr old Asian men are beautiful and still game but am also convinced that I will die alone bc I will never find a man I love. (curse of being a female INTJ? maybe. stay tuned)

So I just went to a lunar new years party for the Asian American Bible study at my university because my friend invited me but like...this other girl I’m friends with was like “yah this is affirmative action, you’re our token minority now” and I’m like ?? and one of my other friends was talking about something her mom did and she was like “so I was like mom you’re being so white!!” and I’m like ?? again because.. why does everyone have to get so caught up on race?

Like most of us came from the same city and Japanese language/ culture/ food/ media/ close friends/ travel have been a huge part of my life since childhood and still are now, so many of the experiences South Korean Am. and Chinese Am. and Taiwanese Am. have in common with each other like I also have in common with them?? But I’m white. So they feel very comfortable using that to make stereotypes and racial comments about me and turn to this like exclusive pan-east-asian identity when like we’re all. full. American. and we have more in common than not so can’t we just embrace that?

(not to mention that I have 100% more in common with a Vietnamese guy than a random white guy so why do Northeast Asian Americans always automatically assume that just because someone looks phenotypically similar they must have the same experience?? also many of my Asian American friends like have no idea how to talk to international students from Asia who don’t speak English as their first language so??)

(Disclaimer: I desperately love my Asian American friends! But it doesn’t make me happy when they say “Lydia you’re practically Asian” because I’m not trying to change who I am but blanket racial stereotypes are also not the answer and I just want to have a relationship unique human to unique human because we’re all part of the same race)

So I’m newly single and my twin is gone for the weekend so I’m being semi-reclusive which means reading books about monks, cleaning, and watching the actual most ridiculous Chinese movie I have ever seen. College update: I have so many classes on women’s rights and feminism and that’s amazing; walking miles in this heat is horrible; I met two girls from Malaysia and Indonesia who are so sweet; my favorite Japanese teachers are gone and the 3rd year class seems intense but exciting.

Two days ago sitting in rush hour traffic for an hour swearing; today sitting in the same traffic, singing along to A Thousand Miles, thinking everyone needs to learn that patience is a virtue.

In other news, my birthday is on Sunday and my twin and I are going to eat Japanese food and wear party hats and blow up balloons (on the downside my boyfriend is in South Korea and my parents are also out of the country)
