Avisaíl García makes a running catch and high fives a little fan - September 10, 2017
Coldest Winter
As the 2017-2018 Winter Meetings take off, what should you expect from Rick Hahn and the White Sox front office. Sadly, we don't have a former player in the front office willing to trade one of the league's best players to the Sox cough Jeter cough. However, we have a very sneaky and strategic front office that surprises us, like with the Welington Castillo signing. There was almost no speculation around that one until it happened. Anyway, what should be expect in the next week?
First, we have heard that trade talks surrounding Jose Abreu were dramatically overstated, especially with the rumors about the Red Sox talks, but keep in mind, Abreu is an unrestricted free agent in 2020, the prospective first season of the White Sox dynasty. In addition, resigning aging stars tends to go downhill the second time around. I wouldn't be shocked to see Abreu regress around 2020, so maybe trading him this year wouldn't be the worst thing. On the other hand (and I've mentioned this plenty of times), Abreu is a leader, especially for our young, Hispanic players, like Moncada. Reports are if Hahn is overwhelmed with the package in return for Abreu, he will proceed, but that is unlikely to happen.
Now, when it comes to Avisail Garcia, things look a little different. Avi is, once again, an unrestricted free agent in 2020, but it doesn't look like he fits in future plans at all. Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, and even able-bodied Charlie Tilson are in line to take over outfield duties in the next couple years. Avi doesn't really make sense, and he, most likely, has hit his peak slashing .330/.380/.506 in 2017. I bet Hahn wants to be blown away in the return for Avi, but I could definitely see him pulling the trigger on an Avi trade with a contender.
The next need to fill or move I can see the Sox making is for an MLB ready starting pitcher, a #4 or #5 starting pitcher, or an outfielder. The latter is probably more unlikely for 2018, as there are plenty of outfielders available via free agency in 2019 (A.J. Pollock, Lonnie Chisenhall, and Yasiel Puig to name a few), but Hahn has surprised us plenty of times.
'Tis the season, the "Hot Stove" season. Seriously, it's the closest thing to Christmas baseball fans can get. It won't be as hot for Sox fans as last season, but, Rick, work your magic.
