I inherited my son’s avocado tree when he went to college. Grew it from seed and begged me to not let it die. Yes, I know, actually getting avocados from it probably won’t happen but he is ridiculously proud of this thing. So now, it lives in my dining room for the winter. Not sure what’s going to happen to it when it gets too big to carry…. Tiny personal heater on my patio? Benefits of Avocados

Avocados are exploding in popularity - to the point that avocado farming in some countries is causing gang warfare, which might discourage you from taking advantage of the many benefits of this fruit. But we need to remember that the avocado is not responsible for the problems. The most reliable way to gain the benefits of avocados is to grow your own fruit.

Sometimes called alligator pears, avocados came from Latin America at least 7000 years ago, long before the European invasion of America. Southeast Texas is a great place to add an avocado to your landscape. Two varieties are popular in this area:

The Hass Avocado - is not cold-hardy but is self-fruitful and widely used in the United States due to its yummy flavor.

The Lula Avocado - is a small, self-fruitful tree, with a pretty muted speckle on the skin. The nutty flavor of this fruit makes it a delicious choice.

You’ll want to plant your tree where it will get full sun and adequate drainage, be protected from winds and frost, and have lots of room. After a thorough watering, let the soil dry out slightly – don’t drown your tree, but make sure you give it enough water, especially when it’s young.

What makes avocados so celebrated?

We all know about guacamole and avocado toast – the internet has dozens of recipes for each one. As your tree begins to bear fruit (when it’s five to seven years old), you may face the “zucchini dilemma” – what to do with all those avocados.

And don’t forget your neighbors. Avocados make lovely gifts. Just put a few in a bag, tie with a ribbon, and you’re ready to set it on some lucky recipient’s doorstep!

Few foods are as versatile as avocado. All you need is to brainstorm, but here are a few for starters:

Stuffed avocado with eggs. The creaminess of the avocado plays well with the eggs—bake in the oven, and top with cheese, bacon, and green onions.

Slice and add as a garnish for salads.

Mash and serve with tostadas, tortilla chips, salsa, taco salads, and as hummus.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks are all vehicles for avocados.
