Where the Streets Have No Shade

I wish that I lived in a neighborhood

where the people don’t hate all the trees,

      where the chainsaws don’t run

      all day long in the sun

and their dust doesn’t hang in the breeze.

Where the leaves aren’t thought of as rubbish

and the shade is a valuable thing,

      where the squirrels and owls

      aren’t welcomed with scowls,

and the birds have a place they can sing.

Instead, all the locals are morons,

and they fear every tree will fall down,

      doesn’t matter how long

      they’ve been there, or how strong,

they’re just cutting them all over town.

Now the old folks remember the good days,

when the trees lined the streets left and right,

      now, there’s hardly a tree

      for the children to see,

just green memories fading from sight.

So I think I’ll go live in the forest,

where the trees only fall when they’re dead,

      where the morons don’t roam,

      for they all hide at home,

but I think I prefer trees instead.

sometimes I stand outside and throw my head back and spread my arms. Then I pretend the wind is an orchestra in a language I always hear but can never decipher. Then I sway my arms and the wind plays for me a song I’ll never know. The trees sprout legs and ballroom dance around me. The world wakes up over and over again with a dance and a song.
