Avoidable deaths refers to untimely deaths among those under age 75 that should not occur with timely and effective health care and policy interventions, says the report from the Canadian Institute of Health Information and Statistics Canada released Thursday. The rate of untimely deaths dropped from 373 per 100,000 Canadians in 1979 to 185 per 100,000 in 2008. That decline was similar to rates in other developed countries.
