Back in the dark ages, the ESC mostly had songs about world peace and harmony. One year, in the swedish selections for the ESC, a single song called “Avundsjuk” (”Envious”) bucked the trend. With a leggy little troll queen with pointed ears and purple hair flanked by two much taller, hotter and more glamorous dancers. And the song was Hilarious with a capital Hi. The translation does not convey the full impact of the level of spite and no-regrets bitchery of the original swedish. Basically you get the 16-tone greyscale of a fireworks display.

The troll herself - Nanne - is known for writing very catchy high-energy songs about uncomfy subjects like gold-diggers or relationships steering onto the rocks. And she has a great voice (in a sub-compact package).

svartsjuk vs avundsjuk

These are both usually translated as “jealous” or “envious”. 

Avundsjuk is the straightforward kind of envy where someone has something that you wish you had. You usually feels like they’re inferior and that’s why you don’t have the thing. This is probably how you feel if you don’t have the Nintendo Switch yet. Avund is the word for envy (the noun) so it’s fitting that the “straightforward” version is in avundsjuk. 

Svartsjuk is usually borne of insecurity that you will lose something that you have. For example, you are svartsjuk if your significant other is chatting with a good-looking person, or your boss is doting on a new employee that threatens your position.

Längtar, hoppas och tror.

Japp det här är jag med två ben. Det känns som en hel evighet sen. Fast jag har faktiskt vant mig.Visst är det konstig ibland när jag tittar på vissa foto.
