An arrangement of autumn leaves, pumpkins. gourds and berries sits against a dark background. The composition captures the earthy tones of fall.

When I think of my favorite season, autumn, my mind goes to brilliant golds and oranges and reds set against amethyst skies. Coffee-flavored frosty mornings that turn into cool afternoons with the embrace of warm sunlight on my shoulders. The hope of those perfect fall days of dazzling color and light are what get me through the long heavy, sticky, drippy, steamy, buggy days of summer. Even though the gift of a perfect fall isn't guaranteed, and even at the best of times, the brilliant sunny days are few, they are a dream worth hoping for.

But the years where the cold snap came too late or too early, where there wasn't enough rain, or too much, or we had wind-storms that hit at the wrong time ... even on those years, there's a quiet majesty, a quiet beauty to autumn. The more muted colors create a season that seems quieter ... a time of reflection ... of memories ... a thoughtful time.

Most of my autumn images are very colorful, but I wanted to create one that celebrates those years where the rains and winds conspire to turn the colorful leaves brown and sent them to the ground, unheralded. I'd like to think of "A Thoughtful Time" as an homage to the less spectacular ... because those autumns have their beauty, too.

I hand sketched this one digitally using one of my own photos as a guide in Escape Motions' Rebelle with their default Grunge brushes. No Ai.

It's loosely based on a photo taken by my daughter in law, Megan Bryan, of her and my son's wonderful Samoyed, Nimbus. Lots of artistic license taken by myself. No Ai.
