BOOK REVIEW of Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo • This novel follows Yejide and her husband Akin. They’ve been married for four years and still she isn’t pregnant, so Akin’s family is doing an intervention and they found Akin a second wife. This decision triggers a story full of deception, hopelessness and betrayal. • My feelings towards this novel were contradictory at the beginning because I just couldn’t connect. I felt like a witness to what was happening but couldn’t empathise, at first. I’m not sure when my feelings shifted but they did and my reading experience became one hell of a ride. It was shock after shock and it left me broken, frustrated and infuriated. One of the great things is how Adebayo adds the political turmoil of Nigeria at the time without taking over the story of this marriage. But for me the most valuable themes were those about motherhood (and consequently fatherhood) and also the gender expectations these characters should fulfill. One thing that truly stuck with me is how women are blamed for everything. Yejide isn’t getting pregnant? Obviously her fault. No one voices the possibility that maybe Akin is to blame; but at the same time Akin cannot be honest with his family and wife because what would they think of him? He’s a man, he is never wrong. And so their story is one based in deception and it leads to despair and consequently the decisions they take just push them farther into a deeper hole. • The only fault I can find is that there are so many shocking twists that it becomes incredibly dramatic and some readers might not find everything believable. The action takes place in suburban Nigeria from the 90's to 2008. It's about Akin and Yejide, a married couple struggling with infertility. It's about so much more than that, this has layers and the more you expose the more you understand the characters. This is a deep look at love, marriage, family- siblings & parents complicate our lives long after leave home and ultimately how grief mutates us. I'm stunned this is a first novel it is SO insightful.
